Feedback from the Guides and their parents has highlighted how much the girls enjoyed the visit. A few have been inspired to look into volunteering with the RNLI when they are old enough.

My mother Jean Carpenter used to run the local house-to-house collections in the New Forest area. My summer holidays as a child were punctuated by two weeks of journeys around the forest delivering the plastic lifeboat collection boxes to the local volunteers, and later picking them up and diligently counting all the pennies and silver. I remember the lifeboat lapel pins, the model lifeboat stations in pubs that launched a lifeboat down a ramp when a coin was put in the slot. Everyone respected and gave to the RNLI. My mother became chair of the Fordingbridge branch and along with her fellow volunteers did so much to raise funds for this essential work to save ‘those in peril on the sea’ - she was a Wren and her brother and my father were in the Navy during the war, so the notion of saving lives at sea was in their DNA. She would be so dismayed to know we’re at a stage in history where people would be anything other than thankful that the RNLI and its volunteers exist. Bon courage!
