I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

Hoofing Activities - Wk of 11/05/24

Wednesday 15th May
Hello, dear reader and (hopefully) donator!

This week I have managed to rack up some holiday miles in Devon.

On Saturday, I took my parents on a short route march across Dartmoor to the ancient Wistman’s Wood. The wood is one of our last surviving rainforests in the UK. It is incredibly special and it was fantastic to see it. There was even more fun to be had when an RN helicopter kept flying past. I thought it was a fly past in my honour, it was the RN keeping an eye on the 2,500 people doing the ‘Ten Tors Challenge’ - I’ll keep training for that one, if you don’t mind…

On Sunday, we visited the shopping Valhalla that is ‘Trago’. My parents needed vinyl flooring for a building project, that was the main aim of the exercise. However, I’d managed to do most of my Mayday Mile by the time we’d walked from the car and to the flooring department! We managed to rack up more miles round the shoe department, and I found some urgently needed new walking shoes and sandals. Then we added to the hoof-o-meter by visiting the cafe.

On Monday, I planned to go to Exeter by train, but Dad was also let out for a day off from being building site manager. With windows being replaced, we both decided neither of us wanted to witness this, so off to Exeter we went. The rain was torrential, the wind was fierce and it was a relief to get to John Lewis’ cafe. Dad and I thought the mish-mash of design styles made it one of the worst JL cafe’s; it was also lacking enough tables for the queue stretching back to the escalators… Hoof mileage and shopping done, we headed back for the train.

Tuesday, Dad was let off being site manager once more and we headed for Knightshayes, a National Trust property. Originally designed by William Burges - a Pre-Raphaelite who was very keen on Medievalism, so keen actually that he had his own ‘Robin Hood’ outfit made. Like most Victorian men of a certain class he was an opium addict. Which also says a lot. John Crace was then brought in to tone down the Burges scheme. Ultimately, the Heathcoat Amory’s still didn’t like the interior, so boxed up walls and ceilings, and spent most of their time in the garden. The NT have since uncovered, restored and redone the house. I felt it was a rather bleak Victorian house dumped in rather wonderful parkland. The interior was like something out of a Disney film. I wouldn’t want to live there…

Today, I visited the local lifeboat. Together, my hoofing and your kind donations, have cheered the local volunteers immensely. There is plenty of space in the virtual bucket for more donations, it all adds up, and means a huge amount to our courageous and amazing lifeboat service.

Until next time,

⚓️ AHOY THERE! 🛟

Friday 10th May

I am walking the ‘Mayday Mile’ for the RNLI as part of their 200th Anniversary this year and I thought it would also be a great way to mark my upcoming milestone (see what I did there?) birthday in the autumn. Hoofing ashore for the RNLI forms the charity part of my own celebrations; quite frankly, the weather tends to be nicer for outdoor activities in May!

I am supporting the RNLI across the UK, but keeping in my thoughts the crew on one bit of the South Devon coastline, where the sea is always rough and waves are huge. I am also mindful of the 4 RNLI stations along the Thames, which are permanently staffed. The Thames is dangerous as it runs fast, it’s freezing cold, it’s tidal and, thanks to the water companies, full of sewage. Not nice to be in trouble on and unpleasant to rescue others from. All the more reason to have the right kit!

Thank you for reading, and supporting me to support our amazing lifesavers through your donations.
