I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

31st May - Day 31

Friday 31st May
So that's it then, Day 31, end of the Mayday Miles.

The last leg today was held in superb early summer weather at Bigbury Golf Club, overlooking the sea.  We started the challenge on the cliffs of West Cornwall 31 days ago and finished today in beautiful South Devon.  3.7 miles (not a long course) to take the total for the month to 111 miles.

Wear and tear to the body - lower back, sciatica nerve and ankles - has been worth every plodding mile and paracetamol!  It could not possibility be the number of golf rounds played during the month of course!!

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to follow my activities on line and for the incredible generosity shown by everyone who sponsored me.  My grand total has now realised £780 with £186 gift aid to be added.

Onwards and upwards

30th May - Day 30

Thursday 30th May
Penultimate day, 5.2 miles from central Tavistock to Pits Cleave, along the A386, busy road but with a path along side.  Last day tomorrow,  Bigbury Golf Club, overlooking the sea, now what a place to conclude the month's challenge.

29th May - Day 29

Wednesday 29th May
Great day's golf at Yelverton,  4.1 miles,  bettered only by the fact the Tavistock won by 6 matches to nil.  Old Father Time trophy remains at Tavistock then.  Anyway, 100 mile target has now be reached with two days to go to the end of the month and a half decent total has been raised for the RNLI.

28th May - Day 28

Tuesday 28th May
Determined to get a decent walk in during the last few days and miles of the challenge.   Real Conan Doyle stuff : dank, murky, misty day with low cloud, mist and rain over the hills of the moors.  Half expected to see a large  hound leap our of the bracken.   However, good walking around Harrowbeer Airfield, Drake's trail and the local area - 5 miles completed.  Near to the 100 mile total.

27th May - Day 27

Monday 27th May
4.7 miles around Tavistock Golf Course, a bit longer than usual because we played off the white tees!!!  Weather generally very pleasant but a few uncomfortable heavy showers.  Four days to go and we're nearly up to our 100 mile target.

26th May - Day 26

Sunday 26th May
A very wet day in West Devon, must be Bank Holiday!  Soggy walk around Yelverton and Drake's Trail - 4.3 miles with wet feet, coat, hat and trousers - just like playing golf but without the ball!

25th May - Day 25

Saturday 25th May
Walking round the Yelverton area, 4.3 miles.  Busy, Bank Holiday Saturday, not everyone watching the Cup Final, or considering the pros and cons of Argyle's new Manager appointment ..... not sure there can be too many pros !!!!

24th May - Day 24

Friday 24th May
A double dose today - 4.2 miles of golf at Tavistock followed by 2.1 miles up to Yelverton  village this afternoon : 6.3 miles in total.  Well on target again for my 100 miles.

23rd May - Day 32

Thursday 23rd May
Only eight days to go and I'm determined to reach my 100 mile target.  4.2 miles today around Carlyon Bay Golf Course, decent golf in dry weather.

22nd May - Day 22

Wednesday 22nd May
After a long day in the car returning to Devon, only 1.2 miles this evening, in the rain of course!

18th to 21st

Tuesday 21st May
Behind with blogs having been up to Woodhall Spa and then on to the National Memorial Arboretum.  So : Saturday - 2.3;  Sunday - 1.9; Monday - 2.9; Tuesday (today) 3.3 .  A lot more miles to get in if I'm to crack the 100 mile mark, only 10 days to achieve it!

16th May - Day 16

Thursday 16th May
After a long drive up to Tamworth, the centre of Robert Peel's new Conservativism, a late walk towards the town and back after a light snack and a Guinness of course, rewarded before my walk.   2.4 miles, enough for the day!  On to Woodhall Spa tomorrow.

17th May. - Day 17

Wednesday 15th May
Difficult getting a walk in today, managed 2.1 miles in Woodhall Spa walking up to the Petwood Hotel and back from the golf course.  Not sure I'll get much more in tomorrow with a full day.

Thank you to my Sponsors
