I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

Thank yolu for taking the time to visit my donation page

Many years ago Don (my dad) was the Engineer on a Danish trawler in the North Sea. One day he was on deck when one of the crew shouted "ENGLISHMAN!!" Apparently the Danish crew thought that Englishmen couldn't stack the ropes well and so, if there was a knot, they'd shout "Englishman".

Don looked around and realised that there was a knot coming towards him as the trawl nets were going down. As the rope whipped past him, while he carried on rolling his cigarette (you have to picture it), he stamped on the knot in the hopes that he could prevent it from passing. He was young & didn't realise the danger he had just put himself in.

The rope wrapped around his ankle, snapping it as it dragged him over the side of the boat and down. Somehow he managed to get free and he remembered that even though he was disorientated, he was still aware enough to realise that the light was up, and he managed to swim to the surface.

Heavy, with his soaked fisherman's jumper, the crew managed to haul him back aboard with a rope around his chest, cracking his ribs and puncturing a lung. He thought that his life was over. He was airlifted to Aberdeen Infirmary and can only assume that he was prepared for the journey by the RNLI.

If it wasn't for the RNLI and the helicopter he wouldn't have lived to bring up his families and touch so many lives. This is why I have chosen the RNLI to donate funds to, in Don's memory.
