I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

I've been volunteering - onshore - for around three and a half years. I joined our incredible local crew here in Aberdeen when I was looking for a voluntary commitment that took up 'less' of my time (I don't know what I was thinking, given the crew is on call 24/7, 365), but I love it.

Coming into this, you hear 'every crew is a family' and I don't know if I had really understood what that meant. But, they are. It's an incredibly special and unique environment that you don't necessarily see from the outside.

On call 24/7, 365 days a year, RNLI crews are all volunteers, who give up their time to save lives at sea. Most importantly, the RNLI is a charity, not a government agency, which means that it relies on donations and fundraising.

To put that into perspective, without donations, there is no one to save lives at sea (and the RNLI has saved thousands of lives). Without fundraising, if you find yourself in trouble on the water, there's no one to help you. The work these volunteers do is outstanding. You only have to read the news centre or follow the RNLI online to see the scale of the support they're offering around the UK and Ireland.

So this year I've decided to not only give my time, but also raise a bit of money for this wonderful bunch. The upside for me? It forces me to do some form of exercise.

Now, walking a mile a day isn't a challenge for me, thanks to the daily dog walk. So, instead of walking my mile, I'm going to attempt to run it (don't worry, that made me laugh too).

I'm not a runner, so to add stakes in the game and hopefully force me to do it, if I don't run my mile, I'm committing to walking 5 miles that day. Surely that will force me to get my trainers on, right?

Run = 1 miles

Walk = 5 miles

Help me to raise funds for the RNLI. Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support our crew?

My Updates

Day 30 (second update) - I officially hit my final and only goal I had left for the month… I’ve ran over the equivalent of a marathon!!!! 😭🙌🏻

Thursday 30th May

Day 30 - penultimate run for this month! (It was an early one today before a busy office day and nail appointment)

Thursday 30th May

Day 29 - lunch time run and day two of my 5k plan, so a longer run but included interval walks

Thursday 30th May

Day 28!

Tuesday 28th May

Day 27 - started a 5k plan today

Day 24

Tuesday 28th May

Day 23 - today, I added a pressure bandage and it definitely helped!

Friday 24th May
I know my knee just needs rest, but I’m so close ✌🏻

Day 22 - my slowest run of the entire month. I walked probably about a third of this.

Friday 24th May
Today was the day that I decided that I don’t care how long it takes to run my mile, I just want to complete every one. If I finish every one, by the time I get to the 31st I’ll have ran a marathon…

Day 21 - having been able to get through so many of these now without stopping, I’m struggling now.

Friday 24th May
My body, my knee in particular, is really feeling the impact of running every day. I had to stop briefly during this run.

Day 20 - back on it for a slow run tonight (although still quicker than the first few days!) because the knee is really niggling.

Monday 20th May

Day 19 and the hangover won. The first - and only - day this month that I’m not getting my 1 mile run or 5 mile walk in.

Monday 20th May

Day 18 - following a nice 5 mile walk in the morning. Mile run done in my fastest time yet 🙌🏻

Monday 20th May

Day 16 - I did a round trip to Glasgow, so spend 6 hours on the train, and the rest of the day at an event, so I balanced out the activity. But by the time I got home at 8pm, after leaving the house at 6:30am, I was so ready for bed.

Friday 17th May

Day 15 - no run on Wednesday. I had quite a bit of pain in my knee and was heading to Glasgow the next day to spend the day on my feet so wanted to give it a rest. 5 miles completed!

Friday 17th May

Day 14 - sadly, couldn’t keep it under 11 minutes.

Friday 17th May

Day 13 - this was a tough one.

Friday 17th May
I really struggled with this run. Everything in my brain told me I couldn’t do it and my fight and flight was kicking in hard.

Day 12 🏃‍♀️

Friday 17th May

Day 11 - first <11 minute run!!

Saturday 11th May

Day 10 - and it was a HOT 20 degrees for tonight’s run!

Friday 10th May

Friday 10th May

Day 8 - completed my first mile with no slowing down! 😭🥰

Friday 10th May

Day 7 - evening run completed!

Tuesday 7th May

Day 6 - no run today due to a little procedure 💉 so today was all about walking! 5 miles + ticked off before dinner.

Monday 6th May

Day five - after a night out last night I was dreading this one. But it got done!

Sunday 5th May

Day four - included a little extra!

Sunday 5th May

Day three!

Friday 3rd May

Day two - lunch time run

Thursday 2nd May
