I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

All good things come to an end!

Friday 31st May
Just 31 days ago I started my walk a mile in May challenge for one of Dad’s favourite charities the RNLI. I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it with my gammy knee but I have completed the challenge and then some! To all those who supported me either financially with your hard earned cash or with messages of encouragement I want to send you all hugs of gratitude and thanks for doing such a splendid job. Between us we smashed my donation target and if you include the gift aid we doubled it. The RNLI celebrates its 200 year anniversary this year and I am proud to say I did my bit to support them. As Dad rides the waves on the Lois Ivan Lifeboat in Whitby I am sure he is proud of my achievement. My medal will be winging it my way soon and it will be an honour to receive it. Who knows it could be the start of a regular walk. 😀 Love and miss you Dad xx

Dodging the showers!

Thursday 23rd May
Well what a change last week it was blooming hot and even going out late in the day was hot and sticky. Luna found it heavy going but we have successfully made it in one piece! Now we have rain. Again! Still onward and upwards we have made it this far and the objective is in sight 😃

I am blown away by all the donations I have received for this challenge. It seems fitting that in its 200 anniversary year the RNLI will benefit from my efforts and your support to continue to save lives at sea. Thank you ❤️

Reflections

Wednesday 15th May
Twenty Four years ago on 14 May 2000 an accident changed my future. I fell cycling and caused a significant injury to my knee. Operations, plaster casts and crutches filled my life with pain and emotional distress. The medical prognosis was being unable to walk unaided (walking stick). Since then I have struggled with my ability to walk longer distances and have continued to have pain and discomfort in my knee. However I do not need to use a stick to help me and I have tried to overcome my issues to get on with life.
Reflecting back on this challenge I wasn’t sure I would be able to do a mile a day. So far so good and at almost half way I continue to meet my daily challenge with enthusiasm. The knee is holding up and no stick required! Twenty Four years ago the future seemed dark. Today it’s still unknown but I can focus on my achievements and move forward. Live in the moment and you will see there is always light.

Wow a week has passed!

Wednesday 8th May
Amazing progress so far. I have donned my trainers each day and Luna and I have headed off on our challenge. Over the bank holiday weekend we had some company from two little ninjas 🥷 who bless their little legs walked a mile with us. We have all enjoyed our first week and head into the next week with enthusiasm. Thanks to everyone who have supported me together we can make a difference!

Day 1

Wednesday 1st May
Well the big day has arrived and the sun is out! Luna and I got our walking shoes on and set off. Me trying to pace myself and Luna full steam ahead. About 10 minutes in she is beginning to flag but we kept on going and going and going finally my Apple Watch said exercise ring closed. Took 31 minutes. So we can see if we start to speed up 😂  A short distance later a very flagging Luna and a rather hot me arrived back at base. Onwards and upwards- day 1 done 👍🏻

Motivation

Friday 12th Apr
Having retired and spent time chilling the need for a challenge is brewing. What to do where will that motivation come from? Incredibly 10 yrs have passed since we lost my dad who spent many a time in RNLI shops and buying gifts from the catalogue each Christmas. As a keen photographer he photographed many, many, many boats of all sizes and the paraphernalia that goes with them. Our links to the new Lois Ivan lifeboat 13-49 at Whitby stem from Dad’s love of Yorkshire and the chance we had to include his name on the boat in the Launch a Memory scheme. Ashley Douglas Skinner MBE this is for you.  I hope you’re grinning 😀
Those that know me will know that exercise is not something I am known for. (Understatement). However, I have set myself and Luna the dog a challenge to do this one for you Dad. Oh and a medal as I have never won a medal and I think it’s time I did. I hope you will follow my success, aching muscles and all! Thank you for the donations you’re such a fantastic group of people to support me and the RNLI who rely on the funds to save lives 🫶
