I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge.

The RNLI has always been close to my heart.

39 years ago, my Dad set sail on his trawler as usual with 4 crew members.  His trawler started to take on water fast and mayday was called. Sadly only 4 out of 5 crew came home. Without the RNLI and the Sea King helicopter, it is unlikely my Dad would have come home either. He was knocked out by a floating log hitting his forehead and severely hypothermic when the lifeboat got to him.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

Day 31

Friday 31st May
I did it🎉😊💪
I am so happy with myself and little Stella. I know she hasn't been on every walk with me, but she has done perhaps 25 of them. Not bad for a little dog with a serious heart murmur.
Today we walked before I have seen to the horses as I have a hospital appt this afternoon.
We explored a bit of the other side of the river.
I have truly enjoyed exploring these footpaths and walks that are no far from my home. They are beautiful and I will keep exploring segments of them to discover them all.
I have truly enjoyed this challenge. It was a big thing for me as I was afraid of failure. Some walks have been difficult and painful with spinal issue, but overall I have loved it. The RNLI means so much to me and it's been an honour to take part🥰

Day 30

Thursday 30th May
Today was a special day as my dad joined me for art of the walk. The an was to walk along mumbles pier to the lifeboat station and hand in £100 that my dad had collected in his savings tin. Unfortunately, the pier was closed for some construction works by the look of it, so we're unable to hand dad's money in person, so he is added it to this online account🥰  I left dad on the pier whilst I went around bracelet bay (to far for dad to walk) and went back to him and we walked back to the car. Special day for me

Day 29

Wednesday 29th May
Well as soon as I parked up, it started raining! Thankfully it stopped after about 10 mins.
We walked a part of the canal and looped into the river side. The canal walk goes for miles either direction and I do plan to explore it all in bite size walks as its so peaceful

Day 28

Tuesday 28th May
Well a wet one today. We followed another part of the canal today. Very pretty, saw ducks and coots.
On the map the part we started on looked longer so I planned a loop in my head , but in reality it wasn't that long before we got to the retail park. So I cut through and headed to the other side that followed the river. It turned out a nice loop in the end. I'm loving finding all these loops on my adventures

Day 27

Monday 27th May
Well a simple walk today as both Stella and I are tired from tge longer walk yesterday.
My horses are stabled near Pen-Clawdd, so we walked part of the Wales costal path along part of the promenade to take in the sea air and brisk breeze!

Day 26

Sunday 26th May
Our longest walk so far😊💪
Not gonna lie my back is aching and so is my bad leg, but I enjoyed the walk.
Followed part of the cycle path along the river and looped back along another foot path. Really peaceful walk

Day 25

Saturday 25th May
Well to receive this email, has made me overwhelmed with joy. Before signing up, I had doubts I could achieve this. With my spinal issues, I have had more downs than ups in the last couple of years, and I was afraid of failing. Some days so far have been tough because of the pain I have been in, but I was determined to do a mile a day. Everything from now on it pure bonus and I am sooo happy

Day 25

Saturday 25th May

Day 25

Saturday 25th May
I waiting for the evening to walk today as it was quite sticky.
I was undecided where to go, so headed directly up from my house out of the village and follows the footpath that leads to another village.
We didn't go to the end, we cut through the cow field as it started to pick with rain and I only had a t shirt on. It picked as the way back, I'm sure Stella believed she was a husky coming along the road home because she tried her hardest to pull like a sled dog, she not a fan of the rain!  Within 5 mins of returning home the heavens opened, so we were lucky😊

Day 24

Day 24

Friday 24th May
Today I was in my childhood town Penarth visiting my parents, so decided to take Stella around Cosmeston Lakes.
I was surprised to see how much more land has been opened up to the park.
I have walked or ridden (horse) a couple hundred miles around there in my youth.
It was lovely to go back

Day 23

Thursday 23rd May
Today we went to Aberdare Country Park. I was up in that area and it's a lovely place to walk. Stella was watching the swans by the lake, they probably watered what she was.... All fluff😂

Day 23

Thursday 23rd May
Stella watching the swan. Quite impressed really as she doesn't normally get close to water!

Day 23

Thursday 23rd May

Day 22

Wednesday 22nd May

Day 22

Wednesday 22nd May
Stella and I went for walk out of the village towards Gellinudd and back through the cow field.
I made a boo boo by somehow stopping my tracker before I walked out of garden🙈 I realised when my phone rang and I stopped. So we actually walked 0.42 miles more than the tracker says as it shouted at me just as I approched the place I set the tracker. I would have been very annoyed with myself if I had not realised!

Day 21

Tuesday 21st May
Well I decided to explore a footpath on the edge of the village with Stella.
It would have given me a loop. I've avoided some of the footpaths that side because I know how boggy they can be and with the wet winter we have had, I doubt they had tried much as the footpaths are sheltered with trees.
Anyways, I get to the crossroads where you can take a footpath in any direction.i knew left would be too wet, ahead, well I had no idea where that would take me
I wanted to go right. Stupidly, I put my trainers on, not my boots.
Big mistake. The ground hadn't dried much and the sheep had free range. I quickly turned around and went back the way I came. Lesson learnt!

Day 20

Monday 20th May
An evening walk for us as it was far too hot after the stables today.
The heavy heat affects my syringomyelia, so today has been more of a challenge, so I took a simple walk around part of the village as estate behind me

Day 19

Sunday 19th May
It's a warm day today so needed a shaded walk for Stella to enjoy.
We went to Penlligaer Woods again, but the bigger side this time.  Quite peaceful for the main part, the river 2as busy with kids playing in it. I was hoping to get a photo of Stella by the waterfall, but it was packed with kids, so that will be another day

Day 18

Saturday 18th May

Say 18

Saturday 18th May
My shortest walk to date, just a little over a mile.
I sustained an injury to the shoulder this morning due to a freak accident with my horse. I got hit hard in the shoulder by my mare who lost her footing. Just one of those things. Consequently, I'm in a fair bit of pain so opted for a straight forward route.
I'm lucky to have lots of parks near where I live. We walked a bit of the canal again. Saw some beautiful carved animals along the way

A walk around Gelli Hir again, this time no rain. I paused at various places and watched the birds on the feeders. Such a beautiful place to be

Day 16

Thursday 16th May
Just a quiet walk around the estate behind my house.
Been a hard day for me with  a spinal flare up, so waited until it was cooler and went for a stroll

Day 16

Thursday 16th May

Day 15

Wednesday 15th May

Day 15

Wednesday 15th May
Halfway there! I needed a flat walk today after the terrain the last 2 days. Due to my spinal issues, loose/slippy footing and hills reek havoc with my body. 20 years ago, it never would have been an issue.
So on my way hone from stables, I stopped at Pontadawe park. I have only been here for a village country show. So I followed the path along the river. It continues into another park, but I looped back onto part of the Swansea canal. I really wanted to explore more as it's so pretty, but I know my limits. I'm pretty sore already and I do not want to screw my body up and ruin this challenge. Those paths are for another day😊

Day 14

Tuesday 14th May
Went to Penlligaer Woods on my way home from stables. I have walked some of the other side (the M4 cuts through it), this side was new. It was nice to explore somewhere new and I can see there are other routes to explore

Day 13

Monday 13th May
Well what a stark contrast in weather from the last week. Very wet, pretty breezy and a tad cooler.
After sorting horses, Stella and I went to explore more of Gelli-Hir Woods which are near the stables.
Despite the rain, it was so peaceful as no other walkers but it was full of birdsong which is so beautiful to listen too. My dad has tried many times to teach me what each bird breed sound like, but I'm really not that good at it🙈

Day 12

Sunday 12th May
After most of the day was very hot, when the weather started to cool, I took the opportunity to go for a walk and took little Stella with me.  She hasn't been a fan of the heat (nor me to be honest!), so it was nice evening walk

Day 12

Sunday 12th May
Walk with Stella around the estate behind me.

Day 11

Saturday 11th May
Very hot day today.
Mum and I were busy digging over the garden so I left my walk until nightfall when it was cool enough to take Stella.
Found a new part of the estate to walk around with a cut through into another road so it gives me more  loop options

Day 11

Saturday 11th May
Night walk with mum and stella

Day 10

Friday 10th May

Day 10

Friday 10th May
Very warm day today, just a slow walk around part of the village. No Stella as far to hot for her

Day 9

Thursday 9th May

Day 9

Thursday 9th May

Day 9

Thursday 9th May
Today is going to be hot, so Stella and I went for a walk to end of village and along the beginnings of a footpath and through the estate home. The village has many footpaths around it and the estate has a lot of cut thoughts so it's nice to do loops and figure of 8 walks

Day 8

Wednesday 8th May

Day 8

Wednesday 8th May
My car went to garage for it's repair first thing. I got the bus to Pontadawe, but the next bus home was an hours wait, so I took the opportunity to walk home. The first mile was very hard going for me as its uphill and hills are difficult with my bad leg. But I took my time, paused when pain got bad and made it home😊

Day 7

Tuesday 7th May
Had an hour between time I got off train to next available bus home.
I used time wisely and walked a detour between stations

Day 7

Tuesday 7th May
Had an hour between getting of train and next bus, so used time wisely

Day 7

Tuesday 7th May
Finished my walk here as bus station is along side it. Very pretty gardens

Day 6

Monday 6th May
Mum and Stella joined me for a walk through another part of the cow field and back today.
Proud of my progress so far

Day 6

Monday 6th May
Walk with mum and Stella through cow field

Day 5

Sunday 5th May
Walk with Stella on the other side of village and through the cow field

Day 4

Saturday 4th May

Day 4

Saturday 4th May
Went for a walk from the stables. The road outside is part of the Gower Way. I walked upto the lookout point and back. My scruffy selfie doesn't do the incredible view justice

Day 4

Saturday 4th May

Day 3

Friday 3rd May
Today mum, Stella and I went for a stroll around part of the village after I got back from the stables.
I feel quite motivated now cokjhg home from stables and doing my mile.
I'm hoping by week four that I may be able to do 2 miles.
Years ago that was simple but with my deteriorating spinal issues,  a mile is about my limit. I do not want to over do it in these early stages because I am determined to succeed in a mile a day😊

Day 2

Thursday 2nd May
This evening I walked with my little pomeranian Stella and my mum who is visiting around the  streets behind where I live.
Its nice to be able to walk with mum 😊

Day 1

Wednesday 1st May
So today I had to use public transport because my car needs a repair. The train was delayed which meant I missed the bus I wanted. Next bus was an hour wait, so I killed time and walked between stops to complete my first mile😊

Mayday mile challenge

Monday 15th Apr
I have decided to take up this challenge because without the RNLI I would have lost my dad 39 years ago.
Dad and 4 crew members (two of my uncles) were on board his trawler at night when she started taking in water. Mayday was called, but she sank fast.
One crew member miraculously swam to shore, the lifeboat picked up my uncles, dad had hold of the other crew member and they were treading water awaiting rescue.
A piece of driftwood  hit my dad on his forehead partially knocking him out and him leaving go of his friend. The sea king helicopter rescued dad, sadly his friend died at sea. Dad had severe hypothermia and was flown to hospital.
I vividly remember being in my nans kitchen with my brother at 5yrs old and my dad walking in with a massive cut/bruise on his forehead. I was too young to understand what had happened and he simply told me "a log hit him".
Without the RNLI rescuing dad and his crew,  I would have grown up without a dad.
Every donation helps them keeping rescuing those in need at sea.
