Taking on the Reindeer Run challenge for RNLI lifesavers

RNLI supporters around the country will be donning their antlers and strapping up their hooves to run 24 miles – all to help keep RNLI volunteers safe this winter.

Freezing seas, numbing winds and sub-zero temperatures – would you fancy launching into that aboard a lifeboat? RNLI crews will be doing just that, battling the elements this winter to continue their mission to save every one.

Reindeer Runners will be raising money so they have everything they need to answer the call for help. Because no matter how harsh the winter weather might be, lifeboat crews will always launch to the rescue. I’d be so grateful if you could sponsor me.

Island run - an extra special one

Wednesday 10th Dec

Run number 3 completed today, on Inis Oirr, Joe's home and the island he was so proud of (better than the "big big" island (Ireland mainland) he would tell me). Today I was really lucky to be joined by islanders Éadaoin, Síle, Ciara, Colm, Fiachna, Rónán, Ciarán, Matt C, Matt S, Una, and Eoin.

It was a last minute message posted by Aoife and yet 11 people came to run, with more saying that they would have joined had they known. Special thanks to Eilis and the students from Colaiste Ghobnait for coming along straight from school, Thanks to all the Seoige's for coming to cheer us on and Áine for the post-run sweets.

We did a circuit of the lake, covering a distance of 2.73miles in 25minutes, avg speed of 10.3km/hr (some of us were a little faster than that!)

As of today, the fundraiser amount sits at €1688.10, with some cash donations as well that I will give to Aran RNLI directly. I am blown away. Thank you all so so much for supporting the fundraiser, it is a testament to the wonderful person that Joe was and to the great work that the RNLI do.

Rith uimhir 3 déanta inniú, ar Inis Oírr, baile Joe agus an t-oileán a raibh sé chomh bródúil as (níos fearr ná an t-oileán "mór mór" (mórthír na hÉireann) a déarfadh sé liom). Inniu bhí an-ádh orm go raibh na hoileánaigh Éadaoin, Síle, Ciara, Colm, Fiachna, Rónán, Ciarán, Matt C, Matt S, Una, agus Eoin linn.

Cé gur teachtaireacht nóiméad deireanach a bhí á phostáil ag Aoife, tháinig 11 duine chun rith, agus dúirt níos mó go mbeadh siad páirteach dá mbeadh a fhios acu. Buíochas speisialta le hEilís agus na daltaí ó Choláiste Ghobnait as teacht díreach ón scoil, buíochas leis na Seoighes go léir as teacht chun tacú linn agus le hÁine as na milseáin i ndiaidh an rith.

Rinneamar ciorcad timpeall an locha, ag clúdach achar 2.73 míle i 25 nóiméad, meánluas de 10.3km/u (bhí cuid againn beagán níos tapúla ná sin!).

Ag an am seo, tá méid na “fundraiser” ag €1688.10, agus “cash donations” freisin a thabharfaidh mé go díreach do RNLI Árann. Táim thar a bheith sásta. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir as tacú leis an fundraiser, is fianaise é ar an duine iontach a bhí Joe agus ar an obair iontach a dhéanann an RNLI

The island truly is the best place on earth!

Go fírinneach,níl aon áit ar domhan níos fearr ná an t-oileán

New fundraising target needed!

Sunday 30th Nov
Wowsers, wasn't expecting to hit my target already, and I haven't even started the challenge!. Thank you so much all for your very generous donations.

To keep the momentum I am going to up the target, this time the figure is 470.00, which represents the 47,000 adult lobsters that were returned to the sea in 2024 as part of the Bord Iascaigh Mhara "V-notching" conservation scheme, started by the lobster fishermen, of which Joe was one.
Every year, a portion of female lobsters, caught by the fishermen have a notch cut in their tail and are released back into the sea. This V notch confers legal protection, meaning if caught they must be released again. This is designed to prevent overfishing of lobster and leave enough to breed and conserve the population.

Reindeer run

Friday 28th Nov
Hi all, I've decided to take on the reindeer run challenge, to raise funds for RNLI, our lifesavers around our beautiful but wild coasts. The challenge is also in memory of a special person, Joe Joyce, a fisherman from the Aran Islands, who lost his life to the sea a few months ago. The RNLI are 90% funded by donations and so every fundraising event helps. I'm aiming to raise €201, which is equal to the number of years that the RNLI has been in operation. It may not seem like a massive task but I've been a bit of a couch potato the last few months so it'll require a bit of a habit change on my part... Wish me luck!
I'm hoping to complete by the 24th December and looking to run a few 3/4 mile-ers on some days so very happy to have company even as an audio call if you fancy getting out for a 1, 2, 3, 4 mile run some day and a catch up in between breathing!. Thanks all and please donate a few quid if you can.

Thank you to my Sponsors
