I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

Why Im doing a Mile a Day for the RNLI

Thursday 30th May
Tomorrow is the final day of May.  I plan to go for as long a walk as I can squeeze in knowing I have a full diary from starting work at 7.30am to a staff quiz and drinks after work...its not going to be easy.
A mile a day probably seems like nothing. Finding time to do it every day has been the challenge.
I was brought up on holidays by the sea, as a child I had no fear of water.    I could not understand as a 5 year old why there was so much panic when I decided to go for a swim while everyone was busy in our holiday cottage in Appledore.  I put on my swimsuit red with a polka dot frill. I took my rubber ring and toddled off to the harbour where we went to get the fish off the boats each evening.  I walked down the slip into the water and began to paddle around looking for the boat that brought the fish I liked, plaice.   It was probably only minutes later that loud voices and shouts caught my attention.  As I child I had no clue that I was now in very deep water, my rubber ring wasn't properly inflated and I couldn't swim much ( my parents not at all)   I think it was my brother in a small rubber dingy who came to get me.  I was lucky... but who would come if I wasn't so lucky ?
My own children love the beach and the sea but are a little more wary of it than i used to be.  Maybe because I have passed on how dangerous the sea can be or because they have seen rescues for themselves whilst on holiday in Wales.

This weekend i spent some time in New Quay, where we went on a not so calm boat ride, I paid close attention to the life vest demo as I am not a great sailor and i my head I was quietly convinced we were going to be sunk.    Back on land I noticed the huge support around the town for the RNLI and realised how much work they must do with a busy working harbour, visiting boats and hundreds of tourists.  If you got into difficulty who would you call ?  The RNLI are an emergency service but one that receives no government funding and relies purely on donations.

My dads favourite charity was the RNLI, we collected for them at his funeral. I have a pair of mugs he bought in Appledore, where I loved the boats so much.  I still make sure to donate every time I can and walk a mile if it helps.
If you feel you cant spare a few pounds ( or alot !)  please consider donating to my page.

PS - if it sways you at all i also became vegetarian and gave up alcohol as well as the mile a day!

The first week

Thursday 16th May
I'm a week into my "Mile a day for the RNLI" and someone said why bother its just a mile ?
I lead a hectic life, simple. To add an extra mile is taking planned effort but it's having a real noticable impact. How ?
1) I never leave my desk. Last week I did my mile at lunch, sun shine, human interaction and time to mull over a few things. Felt great
2) last week gave me a stressful situation that meant I wasnt sleeping, I went home and was really grumpy with the kids so the next day I did the mile before I got home. By the time I was done the problem was in perspective and I arrived home a happy mum.
3) you may know I live at rugby clubs, this used to involve cider or working in the car. This week an hour using the clubs 4 pitches as a route saw me achieve well over the mile easily and helped with my other two goals.
100 % No alcohol on a night out and a rugby presentation day, huge success.
Vegan ...about 80%
Vegetarian 100%
It might be small but targets should be SMART and I'm getting benefits I didn't expect. Looking forward to week 2.

Do I feel fabulous ?

Thursday 16th May
Do you feel loads better? This is a question I've been asked alot. Honestly ? The answer is not alot but....I am noticing changes. Skin seems better, gut health has definately improved and I've lost 4lbs.
I managed another Rugby Presentation night with meat only BBQ, a family BBQ in the sunshine and remained strong throughout it all with no meat and no alcohol.
I missed one mile at the weekend so made up for it by a late 3 mile fast walk over the chase. Long day but what a place to blow out your cobwebs , im so lucky.
