Cuppa for the Crew with Birthday Cake

By Sue Cameron

Sue's Cuppa for the Crew

I’m hosting a Cuppa for the Crew to support RNLI lifesavers.

I’m popping on the kettle and hosting a Cuppa for the Crew, helping to save lives at sea and remembering James on his birthday by gathering friends together for a cup of tea

RNLI volunteers around the UK and Ireland will drop everything the moment their pager goes off. I’m raising money to help make sure they’re always ready to race to the rescue.

Will you join me for a Cuppa for the Crew, to help selfless RNLI volunteers save lives?

So much love ❤️

Friday 25th Sep
I've been baking all day today so I hope that some folk do come on Monday otherwise I'll end up giving it all to the sea! Speaking of which Ive been gifted this remarkable original painting to help raise funds. I absolutely love it and can't help but wonder if any of the fishing vessels captured in the collage had any involvement with the RNLI. I'm so very grateful for your enthusiasm for my endeavours here. Having this to focus on is helping me to face this first 28th September without James for 38 years. Thank you for all the donations and messages it means a lot Sue

What are you like!

Sunday 20th Sep
I was down on my little bit of beach for an hour. I come back and you've only gone and smashed through my target - just like James smashed his first 10k run in full ILB kit at the Lincoln 10k. James didn't just support the RNLI by being a crew member he also put lots of effort into raising much needed funds. I'm so grateful to you all for helping me remember him on 28th September - his first birthday without him - bringing him close and enabling me to share photos and anecdotes. He loved cake too so please do come along and eat some in his memory.

James Brian Porter 28/9/88 - 18/6/26

Saturday 19th Sep
James’s connection with Skegness RNLI began long before he officially joined the crew. Following in the footsteps of his father, he grew up around the lifeboat station, accompanying his dad from a very young age and becoming part of the RNLI family long before he was old enough to wear the pager himself. It was a place that helped shape the man he would become and a cause to which he would dedicate much of his life.
At just 16 years old, James joined Skegness RNLI as a crew member, beginning what would become more than 21 years of dedicated service. Throughout that time, he answered countless calls, trained tirelessly and stood ready to help those in danger at sea, embodying the courage, commitment and selflessness upon which the RNLI is built.
James was a devoted crew member, a respected colleague and a true friend to many. Having also served in the British Army, service to others was at the very heart of who he was. He was steadfast, dependable and quietly courageous, always willing to put others before himself without seeking recognition.
A tall and strong man with an unmistakable presence, James was known not only for his stature but for his kindness, loyalty and unwavering support of those around him. Whether on service, during training or simply sharing time with fellow crew members, he could always be relied upon. His sense of duty, humour and friendship touched the lives of so many.
James leaves behind a legacy of service spanning more than two decades, continuing a proud family connection with the RNLI and making a lasting difference to countless lives along the way. As well as his family, his absence is deeply felt throughout the station at Skegness, the community and the wider RNLI family.

I've borrowed the above from the tribute left on Skegness RNLI facebook page. To me, he was my beautiful big boy, crazy for lifeboats and Newcastle United, a wonderful husband and amazing father. I have been dreading his birthday but when I saw this fundraising 'Cuppa for the Crew' idea I thought he would love it. All the coffee mornings we went to when he was tiny and all the tins he rattled, before and after he wore the uniform of crew.

If you're in the Buckie area, please come, we're right on the coast at the end or beginning of Buckie - depending on your direction. If the weather plays nice we can sit on the bench overlooking the Moray Firth and may even get to see Buckie Lifeboat in action.
