Leg 9 Salthouse to Weybourne

We left Salthouse after a short shower, hoping that it would remain dry for the 3 mile hike to Weybourne, which it did. Initially we followed the edge of the marshes, the path taking us quite close to the shoreline. We wanted to avoid the beach, as here it is large shingle which is very hard to walk on. Our route took us inland and eventually into the woods at Muckleburgh Hill. We skirted the Hill and eventually joined the road dropping down into Weybourne. Sadly we had about a 15 minute wait for the bus - just time for a cheeky half in the Ship Inn.

Leg 8 Cley to Salthouse

We started the leg at the foot of the iconic Cley Windmill, which is now a great place to stay and explore tis part of the coast. Rather than taking one of my, not so great selfies, we were asked by some lovely American tourists if we wanted our photo taken,
We left Cley for the short 4 mile hike to Salthouse, skirting the marshes, passing the North Norfolf Wildlife Trust's Marshes Visitor Centre which affords a panoramic view over the marshes and the distant beach. We arrived in Salthouse just in time to catch the Coasthopper bus back to Cley

Leg 7 Morston Quay to Cley

An interesting leg starting at Mortson Quay  and walking along the bank towards Blakeney again with a view across the marshes under a classic big Norfolk sky. We walked through Blakeney stopping for a much needed coffee at Elsie's on the Quay. We proceeded westwards - passing Wiveton Hall and soon you catch sight of the iconic windmill at Cley.

Leg 6 Stiffkey to Morston

This section of the path is all about the marshes. They extend as far as the eye can see and you can just about make out the shoreline. The approach into Morston Quay is lined with boats of all shapes and sizes.

Leg 5 Wells Next The Sea to Stiffkey

An interesting walk along the East Quay at Wells past all the fishermens' huts to the open marshes.

Leg 3 Burnham Deepdale to Burnham Overy Staithe

A shortish leg, 4 miles. A pleasant walk along the bank from Burnham Deepdale, with almost 360 degree views across the marshes, punctuated by the creeks and at low tide the muddy flats. Turn inland and you have a lovely view of the windmill just outside Burnham Overy Staithe. On reaching the Hard we stopped for a freshly made coffee from Sandy at the Coffee Pedler, before catching the Coastrider back.

Leg 4 Burnham Overy Staithe to Wells Next The Sea lifeboat station

Today (19th May) We set off from Burnham Overy Staithe and walked out onto the dunes bordering the beach. The dunes are immense and are not only a very important defence against the sea, but also a very important coastal environment for lots of flora and fauna.

We crossed Holkham beach, which I found quite hard going and I was pleased to reach Holkham Gap and in particular the Lookout and a welcome cup of tea and a piece of cake,

The final leg took us along the edge of the pinewoods to our final destination for the day - Wells Lifeboat Station and a warm welcome from Dave, one of my fellow volunteers.

Leg 2 - Thornham to Burnham Deepdale 6.5 miles

Stage 2 of our Mayday Challenge – Thornham to Burnham Deepdale
Stage 2 of the Mayday Challenge saw Stuart, Biscuit and me — otherwise known as The Three Biscuiteers — set off from the lovely village of Thornham.
And yes… despite what people say, Norfolk does have hills! This section of the North Norfolk Coast Path heads inland for a while, with a steady climb away from the coast before eventually dropping back down towards Brancaster for the final mile.
By that point, we’d definitely earned a stop at The Ship Hotel, Brancaster for a sausage roll, a portion of chips and, naturally, a well-deserved pint.
Refuelled and ready, we picked up the coast path again, crossing the beautiful marshes towards Brancaster Staithe and finally on to Burnham Deepdale. There was just enough time for a welcome cup of tea at The Nest Farmhouse Café & Shop while we waited for the bus back to Thornham.
The perfect ending to the day came courtesy of Eric's Fish and Chips — takeaway fish and chips enjoyed in my VW campervan while soaking up the last of the afternoon sunshine.
If you’d like to sponsor The Three Biscuiteers and support the challenge — thank you, it would be hugely appreciated!

Leg 1 - Hunstanton Lifeboat Station to Thornham

We set off from the RNLI station at Hunstanton after enjoying a sausage and egg bap at the Beach Cafe. It was nice to meet some of the volunteers at the station.

We walked the 7.5 miles to Thornham, stopping for a refreshing bottle of water at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust cafe at Holme Dunes.

We met some lovely people on the way and we reached Thornham with a few minutes to catch the bus back to Hunstanton. Those last few minutes were like something out of Race Across the World

The Three Biscuiteers, Andy and Stuart Grout, not forgetting the dog, Biscuit, are taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, my son Stuart, my dog Biscuit and I are attempting to walk the 40 odd miles, from Hunstanton Lifeboat station to Cromer Lifeboat Station, calling into Wells Next The Sea station, where I currently volunteer, to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor our RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Thank you to our Sponsors
