I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

Last entry from the Hoe

Friday 31st May
Once again, thank you every one for your support and donations. I leave you with this last picture of the Smeaton Lighthouse on the Hoe in Plymouth, UK - the Ocean City. Your assistance will be very much appreciated by all those who love nature, especially around the waters. My challenge is done!

One day left to the end of May!

Thursday 30th May
I have enjoyed this challenge. It has been my pleasure to give you a little note each day of this month after my walk around the lovely place that I live in Cornwall, UK. I hope you did leave a contribution for this charity, as it is the goodwill that builds a community, and your donation lights up my face and gives me a smile....thank you!

Life is what you see...

Wednesday 29th May
Today, as I walked a short mile I looked at small details along the route. Then I got home and looked at the wallpaper and thought how much we miss if we do not take the time to appreciate the artwork we create of nature.

Rain, rain, go away!

Tuesday 28th May
Too much rain today, so I'm going to wait till I can walk a mile to the pub for a drink and some jazz. Have a good nite!

From a stone rail bridge and a castle...

Monday 27th May
From the historic castle and grand old bridge two days ago, to a quiet back alley to do some cleaning and re-arrangement in my storage garage. A short walk later and I'm home resting my back. Just 1 short mile and a bit...

2 miles in Plymouth

Sunday 26th May
Walked around Plymouth today. The sun stayed out longer than I expected but the rain caught me in the end. 2 miles done!

Churchtown Farm Reserve

Saturday 25th May
Churchtown Farm Reserve is a lovely place to walk and disappear from the world for a while. There is water by the creek and wetland; the skylarks nesting; the trains passing by on the stone bridge; Tamerton Castle on a hill overlooking grapevines and meadows; copses, a disused quarry, and many dogs at play...an easy 2-mile walk in an area covering 61 hectares of nature.

One step at a time...

Friday 24th May
Sometimes we got to take our climb up life's ladder slowly... just one step at a time, and never forget, that every step doubles up as a seat to take a rest. One mile today.

All walk and no cycle

Thursday 23rd May
I have been walking this month because I enjoy moving slowly through places taking in the smells, sights and sounds. A bike ride is fun, but there is so much more to sense while walking. Today I walked 2 miles past the bicycles.

22 May 2024 - Target distance complete!

Thursday 23rd May
I started this challenge with an easy target to walk a mile a day to collect funds for charity, RNLI. When I hit 31 miles, I pushed my target distance up to 50 miles for the month, and now that is achieved too. The money has come in too from friends and sponsors without much persuading... thank you so much for your support. In life, set yourself reasonable challenges, but always aim to achieve more goodwill than pomp and ceremony. Cheers everyone!

21 May 2024

Thursday 23rd May
Took a short 1-mile walk to the park, before heading on to the railway station to meet the wife returning from Somerset. Missed walking with her for 3 days. She had a good time in Wells...

The Browns and the Greens

Monday 20th May
Short walk of 2 miles today. The sun is out and it's good to see the green of nature with lovely flora. However, as the sun shines brightly, the fields are getting brown, and we'll be concerned about water levels in the reservoirs and heatwaves on the horizon.... what can we do?

Kids at play

Sunday 19th May
This last week, I went to quite a few different places for my walks, but the sight of primary kids joyfully playing together in the afternoon sun remains a captured experience I will keep for a very long time. It drew me back to my youth when life was less complicated and I laughed a lot with others, especially my students.

Help your neighbours!

Saturday 18th May
It is wonderful to see care and concern in action... just feel the vibe in this sign.

Got lost in Lostwithiel for 3 hours.

Saturday 18th May
What a joy to walk through the lovely streets and lanes of Lostwithiel today. The beautiful stone walls of the houses create so much connection to the past. I also enjoyed watching the restful streaming flow of the Fowey River. Distance today - 3 miles.

Stop & Smell the Flowers

Friday 17th May
May is such a lovely time to be walking about and enjoying nature. Join the National Trust today.

Give to feel GOOD... share the LOVE!

Friday 17th May
I hope you have enjoyed reading about my brief  comments and looking at my pictures. If you have made a contribution, thank you for caring and sharing. If you left me a message, thank you for the support and encouraging note. A dollar goes a long way, but the love you show, feeds my soul eternally.

16th May, Walked about Saltash

Friday 17th May
There is a lovely view from outside this pub in Saltash that is sitting just below the two bridges facing the Tamar. One can almost forget the world here with a peaceful pint whilst observing the sail boats on a calm day. One short mile over one long hour.

Walking the path...

Wednesday 15th May
Sometimes I walk a particular route to move between two places; other times, I walk to take in the views or smell the flowers. With others, I might walk to count steps or run errands. At the best of times I treat walking the path as a meditative route to self-discovery....it's me putting one step ahead of the next with a good breath at a steady pace. That's life :)

Forgot to update on 14 May - Bizzy!

Wednesday 15th May
14 May - I was pretty bizzy today walking up to get some tool parts and then to go consult a specialist on some important repairs to be done. Hopefully, with what I have bought, and some dangling around the roof, I can fix my soffits soon. 3 miles covered today. BBIZZZieeee!

Rainy today...slugs are wild!

Monday 13th May
Today I just kept walking and walking till I had spotted a zillion slugs. Here is a picture of some partying today! How many did you see?

1 mile around the park

Sunday 12th May
The view from the park looks across the Tamar Valley. Two nights ago, people were here trying to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The distance I walked today is just over a mile.

St Mary & St Boniface Cathedral

Saturday 11th May
From Truro yesterday, I'm visiting the catholic cathedral in Plymouth. This is also a very beautiful church with history. I walked about quite a bit around the roads and area but will record it as just 2 miles. Amen!

Walking in Truro today

Friday 10th May
Truro is in Cornwall and this is the beautiful cathedral that is at the heart of this city. I was happy to walk 4 miles today exploring this area.

Walkabout time!

Thursday 9th May
Today I went for a walk across the Tamar Bridge and enjoyed watching two trains going through the station before it. There's something special about a train... a timeless journey. I walked 2.3 miles today.

Red sky at sunset...

Wednesday 8th May
Went for a short walk after my chicken curry dinner. The sky turned red as the light faded. At sunset, that is supposed to be a good sign that the next day will be dry and pleasant. After 2 miles, I reached home.

A1-mile Day today...

Tuesday 7th May
It's the first Tuesday of the month, so I did my regular 1-mile walk to the local pub to have a few pints and listen to a great jazz band. Just barely covered 1.2 miles but the gradient was super steep. Thankfully, I had 2 good pints for sustenance! 😅

A bit of history...

Monday 6th May
Today I walked 3 miles and passed by a route that led the soldiers on to their brave mission. The place is more modern now, but I stood by the water and thought of those chaps who went forth to war many years ago....

Through the coombe

Sunday 5th May
It's Sunday so I lazed about the house, did some cleaning, then welcomed a good mate who was on his way to Spain. Once he left, my lovely wife and I went for a short walk that took us through a coombe i.e. a small, narrow valley. Distance today: a quick 2.3 miles.

The Royal Albert Bridge - 1859

Saturday 4th May
Here is the older railway bridge built before the modern one below used for cars and pedestrians. It was officially opened on 2 May 1859 and it has a wonderful history. Google it and discover it on a map....

Tamar Bridge in Cornwall

Saturday 4th May
I crossed the Tamar Bridge this morning as I walked from Cornwall to Devon. This bridge was built in 1962. There was a cover of early morning mist but it cleared and I was on my way. Distance walked this morning in good spirits: 5 miles.

Beautiful views on 3 May 2024

Friday 3rd May
Hello again... the sun was shining so we walked in the afternoon after doing some pruning and clearing in the garden. If you look in my gallery of photos below, you will see the beautiful view of the rail bridge with the water in the background. It makes this task worth doing every day. Thank you for encouraging me with your support. Distance today is just about 2.5 miles.

Out and about - I voted!

Thursday 2nd May
Today is not sunny but it stayed dry while I was walking about. We mailed stuff, then went to vote for our area's Police and Crimes Comissioner...then just kept walking about for a while. Distance today: 3 miles.

1st of May.....a good sunny day!

Wednesday 1st May
I went for a walk today and enjoyed the sun on my face. As I made my way across town and out through the streets, I was greeted by others and we stopped to share good cheer and smiles.
A lovely day - 5.9 miles covered.

Almost May... and ready to go.

Tuesday 30th Apr
Good day to everyone!
It's two days to May and I'm happy to say I'm more than pleased to have collected 67% of my set target for this cause. There are lives to be saved, and you guys are helping... thank you!
