I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

31 May - reflections…….

Saturday 1st Jun
The last day in May - where did the month go - it’s certainly warmer now than it was at the beginning of the month! However, my walks, jogs and light runs have been great to get out with my RNLI ‘The Two Anne’s’ vest on.
We have raised another £151.20 + £37.80 with Gift Aid for the RNLI. £189.00 exactly! I wanted the May Day Mile run to appeal to ‘water enthusiasts’ who hadn’t already donated to my London Marathon run in April and thank Patsy and Frank, of Franks’ Fryers in Dawlish, and Sue at the Salty Dog for posting up the info with the pull of donation tabs.
To date we have raised (with Gift Aid)
London Marathon £3049.40
May Day Mile £189.00
Thank you to everyone who has shared the May Day Mile info with pals or who may wish to volunteer their time to the RNLI in the future! Donations for both the Just Giving site and the May Day Mile will stay open until the end of June!
Walking with Stormy Stan and engaging with the public was one of many aspects of the May Day Mile that was hugely rewarding - in the sunshine!

Week 4 …and still going strong!

Thursday 30th May
Here we are at the end of week 4 with 4 more days to go. The miles have clocked up with 41 miles run and walked this week. A total run and walked so far of 192.1 miles! That’s not too bad is it! Whilst the miles have clocked up, so has the opportunity of people to donate to the RNLI -either in a bucket with Stormy, at an RNLI station or on line - my browser donation slips have been available at The Salty Dog, Teignmouth RNLI station and of course, at Frank’s Fryer, Dawlish. It’s not too late to donate with FOUR more days to go!

What’s not to love on one of my favourite routes along the sea wall with the sun out in the early evening with the hound! Just beautiful - who needs an excuse to get out and smile whilst doing your mile!

Week 3 15 - 21 May 2024

Saturday 25th May
Week 3 of  the RNLI May Day Challenge!
My thanks this week go especially to Patsy and Frank who have very kindly put my poster in a lovely frame and placed it on the counter in Frank’s Fryer, Dawlish.  The slips with the https link are on the counter too! They certainly are the best Fish and Chips (and banter!) around!
This week I’ve been running and walking locally and enjoying the beautiful course at Bridport. I certainly got some steps in there as well as some hill walking! This week, I’ve walked and run r1.5 miles, making a total from 1 May of 147.1 miles! I now can’t wait to book a half marathon for the autumn and begin a new training plan! It’s mad but it’s got to be done to keep up the fitness regime!

Summary of Week 2!

Friday 17th May
It’s been a busy week - walking and running. Running at Parkrun and then jogging home. Walking along the sea wall I had a surprise when I was bitten by a spaniel on the hand and in the muscle on my thigh. A total surprise and not a pleasant one. However, the week improved with a golf comp at Yelverton, 2 days down in Cornwall in the rain playing golf and having some fun but also an opportunity to walk and do a bit of running too -plus of course, play golf in lovely surroundings with lovely people! Another week running and walking 52.8 miles!!

Summary of week 1🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️

Friday 17th May
Enjoying the start of another challenge! Not quite like the big Marathon one but fun to find 31 different locations to run and walk to and from! I’m also trying to find new supporters who swim / paddle board/ sail/ dive/ enjoy the beach who may like to support the RNLI - who knows, that emergency phone call could save a life. It would be helpful if you could pass on the online link -thank you!

One week on….

Wednesday 8th May
Here I am running around the lake, by special permission, in the grounds of the very beautiful Uggbrooke House. The very best running conditions: a light breeze, soft surfaces, no traffic, countryside at its best and accompanied by our Otterhound and my ‘training manager’ Brian. What a way to start day 7 of my RNLI May Day Challenge! It was stunning! Thank you for the opportunity  Paula!

Day 6 Starting off at SEA SPORTS Teignmouth

Tuesday 7th May
Had a great day out today! Started my journey off meeting Tim, who is rowing the Atlantic with his pal Andy, on 12 December. There’s nothing quite like a challenge - and this is a HUGE one! Take a peep at their FB page OARMIGHTYMATES2C
I ventured down to Polly Steps and to the port information board, then back through the town, window gazing and noted these brilliant knitted crabs fishing, having a cup of tea, gardening, getting ready to surf board and also attempting sudoku! I almost fell over laughing so continued with a huge smile on my face! A brilliant shop that has wonderful themes throughout the year! I met RNLI friends - Hector (crew) and Margie( shop volunteer) and neighbours down by The Salty Dog, enjoying a lovely cup of coffee! Running is a great way to smile and engage with everyone you pass!

Day 3 with Stormy Sam, our mascot and Nick

Friday 3rd May
What a great catch up with Stormy and Nick before their walk down the Promenade today. Marcus walked to the station and back and I ran from the RNLI station down to the Parson and Clarke, by Smugglers Lane and The Salty Dog! It doesn’t matter how you do your mile as long as you SMILE!

Day 3 Meeting friends….

Friday 3rd May
Here we are in front of our RNLI Boathouse meeting Marcus, a lovely gentleman, also doing the May Day Challenge! Having broken his leg before Christmas, he is now walking with a stick and doing so well! Congratulations Marcus - take care!

Happy people!

Thursday 2nd May
Great to smile and say hello to everyone today on the sea wall and also at The Salty Dog! Great supporters of the RNLI and ‘keeping safe’ information when you get to the beach!

1 May

Thursday 2nd May
Just ran my first mile on Day 1 - I enjoyed my run along the sea wall - cool and refreshing - lovely to get my running shoes on after running 26.2 miles on 21 April! If you can donate to the RNLI that would be great - from all of us at the RNLI - as we come up to our busiest season of the year!

RNLI 200 - Preparation mode!

Thursday 25th Apr
My legs are resting and my feet are beginning to feel like they belong to me after my London Marathon run on Sunday! I loved every step which you may have read about in my Just Giving Anne Steele Arnett blog. This time, I’m running the May Day Mile in Teignmouth where I’d do most of my Marathon training. What kept me going? Smiles, cheers, waves and generally kindness for the RNLI Charity that saves lives at and around the rivers and seas. Together, we can do this - every contribution helps! Thank you!
