Taking on the Reindeer Run Challenge for RNLI lifesavers

RNLI supporters around the country will be donning their antlers and strapping up their hooves to run 24 miles – all to help keep RNLI volunteers safe this winter.

Freezing seas, numbing winds and sub-zero temperatures – would you fancy launching into that aboard a lifeboat? RNLI crews will be doing just that, battling the elements this winter to continue their mission to save every one.

Reindeer Runners will be raising money so they have everything they need to answer the call for help. Because no matter how harsh the winter weather might be, lifeboat crews will always launch to the rescue. I’d be so grateful if you could sponsor me.

We will always store your personal details securely, and they will only be used by the RNLI, RNLI Shop and RNLI College. Your data may also be used for analysis purposes, to help us provide the best service possible. We will only allow information to be used by suppliers working on our behalf and we’ll only share it if required to do so by law. Reindeer Run Wrapup

Wednesday 1st Jan
@evinbail

I signed up for the 2024 RNLI Reindeer Run to challenge myself and help a worthwhile organization. So here I am as 2024 draws to a close celebrating walking 100 miles this month. 221,572 steps 243 flights of stairs 31 days €195 raised through generous donations by friends & supporters - THANK YOU This was a particularly chilly and rainy month to do it. Mother Nature didn’t make it easy. But my health is good enough and I’m grateful. #rnli #irishlifeboats #rnlireindeerrun #reindeerrun #sponsoredwalk #ireland #irishtiktok #irelandtiktok #corkcity #corkcitycentre #corkireland #corkireland🇮🇪

31 December

Wednesday 1st Jan
I did it! I walked 100 miles in the month of December while being sponsored by generous friends donating to the RNLI.

30 December

Monday 30th Dec
Motivation is lacking this week. But got out briefly. I think I have about 1 mile left to reach my goal of 100 — and one day left in the month of December. Can I do it? Yes, of course. Thank you all who supporting me in this. Thank you to everyone else participating as it has been fun seeing them post with the hashtag. And especially thank you to the lifesavers with RNLI Irish Lifeboats.

29 December

Sunday 29th Dec
This is one of the hardest weeks to get moving. I admire all the first responders and Irish lifeboat lifesavers out there over the holidays.

28 December

Saturday 28th Dec
It’s PJ season and quiet days reading. But I went for a walk by the Lee today.

27 December

Friday 27th Dec
Betwixdays are slow. Short walk around the block was all I managed. Will go further afield tomorrow. Just 9 miles left to reach my goal of 100 miles this month.

26 December

Thursday 26th Dec
Baking today and eating leftovers. Just a little walk up by Mitchelstown when it wasn’t as rainy.

Merry Christmas

Wednesday 25th Dec
Very little activity today. But appreciative for the lifesavers of the Irish Lifeboats who are on call even on Christmas Day.

24 December

Tuesday 24th Dec
Though I push myself to walk that bit more each day, I have also learned to let go of my perception of goal attainment. Sure, I prefer a nice even 10k steps and 5 miles each day, but if I am just short of that it doesn’t mean I need to go for a walk when my body needs rest. It took me nearly five decades to realize that!

23 December

Monday 23rd Dec
Long day. Walked around town and Victorian Quarter. I was just shy of 5mi 11k steps but horrible headache and so tired.

22 December

Sunday 22nd Dec
I was exhausted this weekend, but today was next level. Some days are like that and listening to our bodies is important. I’m very grateful for the devotion and energy the RNLI Irish Lifeboat lifesavers have every day year-round.

21 December

Saturday 21st Dec
After a hectic week, today was about rest. I worked really hard to make sure the couch didn’t float away and did arts & crafts with my kid. It was lovely.

20 December

Friday 20th Dec
I may fall asleep standing up today. So this is brief update.

19 December

Thursday 19th Dec
What a beautiful day for a walk. Stunning weather for it.

18 December

Thursday 19th Dec
I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow so missed posting this update last night. Love when I hit over 10k steps. My total now is just shy of 64 miles this month and a total of 141,209 steps (and 146 flights of stairs) with €195 raised. Thank you all so much.

17 December

Tuesday 17th Dec
It was rainy and cold. Managed a walk around town in my waterproof Bean Boots, but didn’t push it. Then at bedtime I saw I was under 10k steps so I went out for a quick walk. Finished strong. It sounds less impressive to do a mile here and there throughout the day than to do it all at once, but cumulatively I’ll admit that 54 miles in just over two weeks sounds fairly decent. I’ll keep walking because I am encouraged by and appreciative of your generous support. Let’s see how many miles I cover this month. I’m thinking it may be as high as 80 if I base the next two weeks on my last two weeks. Time will tell!

16 December

Monday 16th Dec
Now that I’m focusing on these daily walks, it seems like I don’t walk as much unless it’s over 5 miles. But it all accumulates and some days it is harder to find the time or energy. This week is a busy one for everyone, but especially for the Irish Lifeboats. As the RNLI comes to the end of its milestone 200th year, let’s remember and acknowledge the year-round work to keep Irish waterways and coastlines safe. On average, RNLI lifeboats launch over 100 times during the Christmas period every year. Whatever weather winter throws at them, RNLI crews are ready to battle the elements to save lives at sea. These rescues, and others all year round, are only made possible by RNLI’s generous supporters (like YOU) who help to fund the essential kit, training, and equipment needed to keep crews prepared and protected.

15 December

Sunday 15th Dec
Took a walk in Wilton/Bishopstown today then another by Fitzgerald Park. I felt like the weather was less biting cold than last week, but no doubt the temperature at sea or in the water are dangerously cold. Another reason to appreciate the work of RNLI on our Irish coastline and major inland waterways. Though my distance goal is 52 miles, I will keep at it and try to clock as many miles as I can this month. Adding a dedicated walk to my day or taking the long way on a routine walk has been wonderful to get more time listening to audiobooks too!

14 December

Saturday 14th Dec
Massive headache today. Staying hydrated and nourished, but slowing down on all else.

13 December

Saturday 14th Dec
Today, I walked around Cork City Centre for almost six hours. I browsed a few shops, dined out, and randomly bumped into no fewer than six people I know (pure Cork). It was A LOT of walking but a good dry day for it.

12 December

Thursday 12th Dec
That’s a lot of stairs! Today, I walked around Ballincollig. It was a nice dry morning for it. I cannot believe you all surpassed my fundraising goal. You are amazing and thank you for cheering me on in this 52-mile Reindeer Run. But most of all, thank you for supporting the work of Irish Lifeboats.

11 December

Wednesday 11th Dec
Very chilly morning, but I got a nice morning walk outside on my way to/from coffee with a friend over by UCC.

10 December

Tuesday 10th Dec
Morning walk while things were quite crisp and chilly, but bundled with a hat & gloves. There was a hill involved and stairs as I walked through UCC. Wow! It really adds up. May be sore tomorrow.

9 December

Tuesday 10th Dec
The weather was quite cold, but at least dry, so I went outside for a walk in four occasions over the course of the day. It added up to almost 7 miles. Phew!

8 December

Sunday 8th Dec
Today was very cold and windy, but I went down for a walk in Kinsale with a friend. We passed the RNLI station in the harbour which was a nice reminder why I’m doing this.

7 December

Saturday 7th Dec
Hi, everyone! Fundraising is going a bit slow so I’m upping my challenge. You can donate whatever you’re willing & able, but now I will run/walk double the planned distance. Instead of 24 miles in December, I will run/walk 52 miles this month. It’ll be difficult to achieve, but not as difficult as the work of the dedicated RNLI lifesavers. What do you say? I’ve updated my previous posts to be consistent and avoid confusion. Now, I just need to cover that distance in the next three weeks.

Storm Darragh

Saturday 7th Dec
@evinbail

You can see here the wind speeds at various points along the southern coastline from Mizen Head to Rosslare Harbour. It is weather like Storm Darragh that reminds us how dedicated first responders are, especially the @RNLI. Which is why I chose to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) by participating in their 2024 #reindeerrun Reindeer Run. Throughout the month of December, I’m walking/running 24 miles to raise vital funds for the RNLI. Every mile represents one of the 24 hours that RNLI lifesavers are on call every single day—even on Christmas Day—to save lives at sea. Founded in 1824, the RNLI now operates 46 stations around the coastlines of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as major inland waterways. Over the last five years, RNLI lifeboats have launched on average more than 100 times during the Christmas period alone. These heroic volunteers work tirelessly, often in treacherous conditions, and every penny raised this Christmas will help fund the supplies and equipment they need to keep saving lives. If you’d like to sponsor me, it would mean the world. For €12.48 total donation, that’s €0.52 cents for each of the 24 miles to represent 24 hours a day, 52 weeks every year. Every little bit adds up. That said, there’s absolutely no pressure or obligation. Cost of living is up, money is tight, and even your reading this far & watching my video shows huge support https://fundraise.rnli.org/s/12822/13507 #stormdarragh #ireland #corkireland #irishtiktok #irelandtiktok #brunchcork #rnli #lifeboatstation #lifeboat #irishcoast #wildatlanticway #rnlireindeerrun #fundraising

6 December

Saturday 7th Dec
With Storm Darragh outside, I went for a walk inside Mahon Point Shopping Centre with a friend. It gave us over an hour to catch up, sip our hot chocolates, and avoid the weather. Sometimes that’s all you need.

4 December

Wednesday 4th Dec
Easing back after a head cold, so a leisurely pace for a walk this morning. Yes, it was raining, but I stuck it out and looked for rainbows. 🌈 None found, but I was comforted by a hot chocolate when I got home. You know who else braves the rain? Selfless RNLI volunteer rescuers. If you have a moment to reshare my page or sponsor me for this Reindeer Run, it is greatly appreciated. This weekend, I’ll try to do a video with some pretty scenery.

2 December

Monday 2nd Dec
Had a nice walk outside today.

Kicking It Off

Sunday 1st Dec
It’s December 1st and the Reindeer Run is kicking off today. I have a fever from whatever is making the rounds, so no chance of moving more than a 1/2 mile today. I have the rest of the month to clock my 52 miles, so this is just a day to get ready.

This has, however, reminded me of how many volunteers it must take to keep the RNLI going. The strength of community and numbers to make sure if someone gets sick, someone else can fill in.

I’ll be tracking my activity on an Apple Watch and entering it manually here with photos of the stats from my activity screen. It doesn’t connect directly. I’ll also share summaries with photos from my runs/walks on Instagram and Bluesky as @brunchcork so please join in cheering me on, and sponsor me if that is something you’re able to do.

Let’s Do This!

Friday 22nd Nov
This December, I am participating in the Reindeer Run to raise vital funds for the RNLI.

Throughout the month of December, I’m walking/running **52 MILES** (the usual distance is 24, but you know I’m an overachiever in all the least convenient ways). Every mile I run/walk in December represents one of the 52 weeks that RNLI lifesavers are on call 24/7—even at Christmas—to save lives at sea.

Every little bit adds up. That said, there’s absolutely no pressure or obligation. Cost of living is up, money is tight, and even your reading this far & watching my video shows huge support

Wishing everyone peace and joy. 💕

I’ll post updates on my distances each week, or when I cover a long distance on a particular day.

Thank you for considering this, and for helping to make a difference wherever you can in your community and beyond.

Thank you to my Sponsors
