I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers
This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.
Unknown to myself, I have been living with a heart issue – thickening of one wall of the heart.
Whilst at work in July 2023, this caused my heart to stop. Following extensive intervention from both work colleagues and the Air Ambulance Service, I was revived and taken to Hospital.
On admission, I was operated on to resolve some internal bleeding where a cancerous growth was identified in my bowel. This was removed.
As a result of these issues, I was kept under full sedation, ( effectively, an induced coma ), for my initial 4-5 weeks in Hospital
One side-effect of this sedation is that the body loses muscle mass at around 3% per day. Obviously, the length of my sedation had a considerable effect on my body.
When fully revived, I had no use of my arms and legs.
I have been working to remedy this – initially with Physio whilst in Hospital and then my own exercise routines when I was discharged in December.
As part of my own progress, I have set a goal to “Walk a Mile a day in May”. Each mile will be walked without using any mobility aids. To date, the furthest I have walked without these aids is about one hundred meters.
Knowing that my efforts are to help such a worthy cause as the RNLI is a great motivator for me. The Orange Boats are there whenever we need them – now it’s our time to be there when they need us. Please give what you can to help support this fundraising exercise.
