I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m taking on the RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge to support the incredible crews who risk their lives to save others at sea.

Back in December 2022, I was part of a crew aboard a 72ft cat zero yacht sailing the North Atlantic when disaster struck—we experienced catastrophic engine failure over 100 miles from land.

For hours, we were adrift with no winds and no means of propulsion, at the mercy of the elements. It was a sobering moment when our skipper briefed us to conserve our limited supplies, unsure of how long it would be before we reached a safe haven.

Fortunately, the winds eventually picked up, allowing us to navigate towards safety. However, our challenges were far from over. Battling through a force 9 thunderstorm, we faced the daunting task of reaching land without engine control.

As night fell, we found ourselves surrounded by large ships, vulnerable to potential collisions. It was a relief when passing vessels were contacted about our position and one offered assistance.

Late into the night, with the guidance of the coast guard, we were safely towed into port. The relief and gratitude we felt towards these heroes were immeasurable.

This experience has inspired me to give back. By participating in the RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge, I hope to support the brave men and women who ensure that no one is left stranded at sea.

Will you join me in sponsoring my challenge and supporting the RNLI crews who are always ready to answer the call of those in distress?
