How your support helped the RNLI in 2024

437 Lives saved

9,141 Lifeboat launches

I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Island Miles + a sketch !

Sunday 10th May
Doing my Mayday Miles on Easdale Island. A necklace of islands across the horizon; fingers of rock reaching out into the Atlantic, and mountains of slate glittering with pyrites from the flooded mines of the 1800s. Shapes and textures, lines and colour - so much fun. In spite of the fact I had to swap rucksacks from my usual sketching bag and left the best paint and brushes behind 🙈🙄. Every day I give thanks for living on this windy northwest rocky seaboard with the gulls and oystercatchers, and today a slow fly past from a magnificent gannet. Quiet blessings. Oh and great coffee & scone from The Puffer 😋.

Clippers Artist in Residence launch

Thursday 23rd Apr
Im grateful to The Oban Times for publicising the launch of my residency at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race when it comes to Oban in July. Seven paintings are already complete and ready for sale, so I’m currently working on the Oban Host Port commission which is being painted on an Admiralty Firth of Lorn sea chart (donated by Oban Lifeboat crew). It will feature all ten Clipper yachts and small paintings of Iona Abbey, Dubh Artach lighthouse, the Corryvreckan whirlpool and OBAN’s McCaig’s Tower. When I’m not painting I’m keeping up the Mayday Miles and these beautiful sunsets shimmering off the water are making it a real pleasure. Another three miles ticked off tonight.

Fuelled by Coffee (decaf !)

Monday 20th Apr
This is the way I like to do my Mayday Miles - by the sea, sun shining and @obanchocolate coffee in hand 😉

The first 4 miles . . .

Sunday 19th Apr
Thank goodness a different weather system arrived at lunchtime after weeks of drenching rain showers.   The first 4 miles are ticked off, walking from home to Dunbeg, round the coast.  Beautiful views, trees greening over and tadpoles in the flooded ditches.  Spring is slowly arriving.

Exciting News !

Monday 13th Apr
Here I am doing the May Day Mile again, aiming to do 100 miles and £1,000 in May . . .  but that's not all !  I'm combining this with another fundraiser for the RNLI as I prepare for a World First :  to be the Artist in Residence for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race which will arrive in Oban from Washington DC around 11 July this year.   As I walk my May Day Miles by the Atlantic Ocean, I'll be making paintings on local sea charts, of the Clippers, local seascapes and some of our native wildlife.   Join me for the journey, as I post images of my work, which will be on sale in the Clipper Village on the North Pier in Oban 14 - 17 July.   Why not come and visit me for an exciting day when the town will be buzzing.
