I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

Day 14 - Rhoose to Barry

Wednesday 14th May
A walk along the costal path from Rhoose to Barry taking in Rhoose Point, Porthkerry Country Park with its viaduct and Cold Knapp.

Day 13 - Cefn Onn Country Park

Tuesday 13th May
A short walk today around Cefn Onn Country Park, which was full of colour. The rhododendrons were in full bloom and we even saw a heron. Finley and Freddy had a great time.

Day 12 - Cardiff Sports Village

Monday 12th May
Today we walked around the area of Cardiff Sports Village with the Ice skating ring, Swimming Pool and White Water Rafting Centre. We also walked over the Pont-Y-Werin Bridge and went round in circles for a bit. All Finished off with a lovely drink and muffin.

Day 11 - Lavernock point

Sunday 11th May
Today's walk started directly after a shift at the Local RNLI Shop. We walked to Lavernock point where in May 1897 the world's first radio transmission over sea took place over the Bristol Channel to the  island of Flatholm. All agreed to return back the same way because it is far more picturesque than the alternative.

Day 10 - Ely Trail

Saturday 10th May
Today we walked the Ely Trail to St Fagans museum. Of Course we had to have a walk round once we got their. Enjoyed a lovely Cheesy Bread from the Bakers, a half at the Vulcan Pub plus some sweets to go home with.

Day 9 - Penarth

Friday 9th May
The first (and probably last time) I allow Finley and Freddie to ''plan'' the walk. Clearly they had to pass a playground. A few interesting turns at the start.

Day 8 - Cardiff Civic Center ish

Thursday 8th May
Today's walk involved Finley and Freddie taking their first ever bus ride, exciting. We walked from the new Bus interchange to Cardiff Civic Center with a detour into the Museum. Well they have dinosaurs.

Day 7 - Penarth Marine

Wednesday 7th May
The pictures mainly speak for themselves today. Finley and Freddie only have short legs so I had to carry them up the steps :-)

Day 6 - Penarth Head

Tuesday 6th May
A short walk today around Belle Vue Park, St Augustine's Church and Penarth Head Park.

Day 5 - Cosmeston Medieval Village

Monday 5th May
Today we visited the medieval village at Cosmeston Country Park. As you can see Finley and Freddie had a great time.

Day 4 - Fourteen Locks

Sunday 4th May
Today's walk started at the ridgeway with some light refreshment in an appropriately named chalet before following the Monmouthshire Canal towpath, Bettws Hill, and the Ynys-y-fro Reservoir.  Then a well needed break a cuppa at Fourteen Locks Canal Center before completing the final stretch.

Day 3 - WWT Martin Mere

Saturday 3rd May
Finley and Freddie really enjoyed walking around Wildfowl and  Wetland Trust Martin Mere. Spotted some  Avocets, Lapwing, A Marsh Harrier, a pair of noise Trumpiter Swans and a large number of greylag geese and shell ducks. Finley and Freddie also wanted a picture taken with bust of WWT founder Sir Peter Scott.

Day 2 - Brimham Rock

Friday 2nd May
Finley and Freddie really enjoyed walking around unusual rock formations. Trying to spot the Dancing Bear, Eagle and Mushroom. The Bee Gees used the location in their 'You win again' video!

Day 1 - Bolton Abbey

Thursday 1st May
Excellent first walk, if a bit tiring. Those of you keep on All Creatures Great and Small will hopefully recognise one of the bridges.

One Day to Go

Wednesday 30th Apr
We are all getting really excited about the MayDay Mile. Finley and Freddie are getting all prepared.  Although the aim is to do a Mile each day, as in previous years we will probably walk further on some days.
