I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea. (Also registered for the Christian Aid 70km in May challenge, to run concurrently - but not sure how I'll manage the dual fundraising)  My current target is 200km = 125 miles

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

May 31st - final fling

Saturday 1st Jun
I wish I'd had time for another road trip but finished with a Cowley circuit. The final walked Mayday mile was fittingly by water,  along the Thames towpath from Donnington bridge to Iffley.
Total  cycled and walked (with maths to check) was 333 miles . Now hoping to raise the sponsorship total

Penultimate day - and hit the target

Friday 31st May

meal delivery - walked 1.2, cycled 11.46 so 317 miles covered (I'd better check the maths) and one day to add some more

and hoping for more sponsorship

Countdown : 2 days to go, 7 miles...

Wednesday 29th May
.... but I'll better that, having realised that in 2023, I cycled over 500 miles (rather than km) in May for Transform Trade

Countdown - 3 days to go - 19 miles, to include at least 3 walked, one each day

Tuesday 28th May
cycled 19.6 and walked 1 mile today

Countdown - 4 days to go.....

Monday 27th May
.....39 miles, to include at least 4 walked, one daily
Sunday 26th May

oops! so much for a daily report....

I don't think I'll now provide the full daily details - just totals so far, with 5 days to go

I've walked &/or cycled every day of May except last Wednesday 22 May, when I wimped out because of heavy rain - I'd planned to cycle to Headington for a Barton community meeting and OCMS steward duty and thence straight to the Vue cinema for a ROH live Royal Ballet streaming  - but I did it all in the car

at the end of today's  30.20 mile day, I've 47 miles left, to include at least 5 miles for the RNLI Mayday mile a day

total achieved so far : cycled 232.28 miles, walked 32.51 = 264.79

May 10th to 14th

Tuesday 14th May
Friday 10  - just about a mile's walk

Saturday 11 - walk to/at St James Centre - ride to concert @ St Giles Church = 12.69 miles

Sunday 12 - walking locally setting up CAW display - at Charlbury for Art Weeks - delivering CAW envelopes to Westbury Crescent = 4.56 miles

Monday 13 - cycle OtB - delivering CAW bucket, banner and bunting to 3 Parish schools and other church stuff = 11.82 miles
walk 1 mile round Flo Park, putting Big Brunch posters up

Tuesday 14  - cycle  meal delivery - OtB - evening ride =b15 miles + walk 1 mile round Flo Park

May 9th on the Gower peninsula

Friday 10th May
Oxfordshire Outdoor Learning Trust trustees awayday to Kilvrough Manor OEC  - walk Southgate to Pobble Bay to watch the children cliff climbing and enjoying the freedom of the beach : 1.94 miles

up to May 8th

Wednesday 8th May
mainly cycling and not much walking...  81.97 miles cycled;

7.50 miles walked  = 89.47 miles total  = 143.99 km

I think I must increase my target!

hardest mile was the Bannister community mile on Monday - jeffed it in 12 minutes 12 seconds - must get fitter

May 2nd - 5th

Sunday 5th May
May 2nd cycled 25.21 miles
May 3rd walked 1.60 miles    at Hill End Outdoor Education Centre
May 4th  walked 2.12 miles   at Hill End
May 5th  walked 2.78 miles on Shotover and at Florence Park
so on target!

May 1st

Wednesday 1st May
day 1 - only on the bike - straight to a Governors meeting at St. Francis CE Primary School and then a longer route back on a Street Tag powerhour - although only for 45 minutes - 8.95 miles = 14.4 km.   I'd intended going into Oxford for May Morning and walking round town, but regret the body wasn't willing at 04.30
