I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

Friday 24th May
Still chipping away at the miles and still carrying the bag. It's been all go really, with the bag breaking at one point! Luckily one of my clever friends donated their time/skill with a sewing machine as well as.their money so big thanks to them for that: bag fixed and still on it's Mayday Mile journey.

Also after my last blog post I was running at my local beach and happened upon a person in some distress. It looked very much like they had broken their ankle so I ended up phoning the coastguard myself and attending the shout to help transfer them to the ambulance.

Remember, in an emergency at the coast, dial 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD. (HM Coastguard task the RNLI to emergencies too).

Week 1 done!

Wednesday 8th May
What a week.

I decided to keep it "themed" as mentioned in my previous post... So I've been trying to break my Coastguard Rescue Team's general "patrol area" down into 1m chunks, concentrating on the areas where we might work with our colleagues on the Lifeboat.

In addition, real life meant a bit of travel had to happen but I managed to work out a way of sticking with the theme, visiting different RNLI stations (Bad Achub Beaumaris, Flint Lifeboat Station and Formby Lifeguard Station).

I'm continuing with lugging the bag along, because I feel that if you are going to be kind enough to hand over your hard earned cash I ought to make it a real challenge! To recap this is the bag I keep nearby when I make myself "available" to HM Coastguard (like being "on-call"; we text in when we can/can't respond to emergencies). It contains all of my PPE/PPC: overalls, coat, salopettes, helmet, goggles, radio, torch and boots etc doesn't sound like much but apparently it adds up to 10kgs!

Day 1, making it harder for myself 🤦

Wednesday 1st May
A mile sounded a little bit too doable, so what did I do? I decided to increase the challenge and run with a 10kg backpack!

As a Coastguard "on call" I keep all of my PPE and PPC with me ready for my pager going off. Sometimes shouts will also involve the RNLI so I thought it was a fitting way to mark day 1, running for the RNLI as a Coastguard Rescue Officer.

I'm not sure if I'll manage all 31miles though!
