I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Why I'm Doing the Mayday Mile

Thursday 1st May
I recently sponsored the London Air Ambulance Charity because these services aren't government-funded. All air ambulance and rescue services, such as the RNLI, are completely funded by charitable donation.

The RNLI published their statistics for 2024. it was their fourth-busiest year on record, with a total of 437 lives saved (that’s more than one a day!).

In 2024, there were:
  • 9,141 lifeboat launches
  • 17,068 people helped out of dangerous situations
  • 352 lives saved by RNLI lifeboat crews
  • 85 lives saved by RNLI lifeguards
  • Over 17,000 people helped by RNLI lifeguards
It is such an important service that could easily be taken for granted. These people who were rescued would have died anyway without the service, so the charitable donations are very important.

I'm so active anyway, walking to work, running at the gym, that I felt I could do what I normally do every day, and contribute something very important at the same time. Your donation really matters and is going towards something people really need.

One person said to me that it isn't much of a challenge for me if I walk to work anyway, and I agreed. I put some thought into it, and I've decided I will walk the mile in one go, and just for fun, I will see if I can go out on some bike rides as well. I'll be recording everything on my Strava and posting it all here so you can follow me through the month. Let's hope the weather remains as beautiful as it is!

Great idea and a vital cause. Friend and son were recently saved. He was close to drowning trying to save his son who was blown out on windsurfer.
