How your support helped the RNLI in 2024

437 Lives saved

25,327 People aided by lifeboat crews and lifeguards

9,141 Lifeboat launches

I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

Last 5 days

Saturday 23rd May
The last five days have been a mix of walks and gym sessions while the calf finds it's way again.

I've started tracking the weight lifting exercises now too, so far I've lifted the equivalent of an elephant and today(23rd) a truck.

Onwards to tomorrow with more exercise planned 💪🏼💪🏼

Days 15 - 18

Monday 18th May
A mix of efforts over the last few days, mainly with a focus on letting my calf recover so I can actually run again 🙈 I've now got some pads, straps and Kinesiology tape for it too, so I'm feeling confident that tomorrow I can get a mile effort in at more than walking pace 🤞🏼 My main efforts have been on going further for walks and adding in more elevation to the activities. I'm making small progress all the time back to a normal level of fitness. Thanks for following!

Day #14

Thursday 14th May
Oops! My recovering calf wasn't ready and twinged again soon into my mile attempt. In a remarkable show of maturity for me, I decided to stop and go home. Once there I strapped it up and took the dog for a walk instead. I've concluded that it will be mostly walks for the foreseeable until I better understand what my calf needs. As much as I want to run the 31 miles in may I also need to be sensible about the future and keep myself in best shape - there's always next May.

My goal has, for now, pivoted to a walking distance goal, I'll aim to cover around 3 miles a day, ideally in one effort, but maybe a mix of activities. Dusting off the bike over the weekend is also on the cards. That should be lower impact on the recovering muscle group.

Wish me luck and thanks as always for the support!

Birthday Mile! 13th.

Thursday 14th May
Turning 37 this year was a massive inspiration for me to take on this challenge. I'm hopeful of getting fit and healthy this time and have a stronger mindset than ever. Joining a gym has been a great decision and I've found a great community at Cattlestrength gym. I headed there on the evening of my birthday with my son, Jason. I did a tidy job of a treadmill mile in 11:35 and felt super keen for an outdoors run on the 14th. . .

Days 10, 11 and 12

Tuesday 12th May
I made a poor choice on Sunday 10th, started the run without good stretching and it was an immediate downhill start. Ultimately my calves were cooked within about 0.3 miles and I finished the mile at walking pace then continued the walk around Fishguard at a slower pace. On Monday 11th I settled for a slow paced dog walk and covered just under 2 miles. Today, the 12th I headed to the gym to put in a treadmill effort, my left calf is still sore though so it was an on/off run in the end. But I got through it. Added in some rowing and some weights training to make up an hour's activity total. Progress is good, and I need to keep a positive attitude, so roll on tomorrow for another go!

Days 7, 8 and 9

Saturday 9th May
Ongoing efforts are paying off. Although the legs aren't happy after day 9, so possibly a different challenge tomorrow.

Run #7 was a treadmill effort at Cattlestrength Gym and I was over the moon with that - ran for a solid 0.55miles before having a stroll break and then mixed in a gym session on weights and cardio.

Day #8 was a loop around the port at Fishguard and an extra mile in the evening.

Day #9 was a run along the port and a walk back once the mile was done.

Day #6

Wednesday 6th May
Huge effort today! For me this was epic! Still plenty of progress to make but I managed a mile under 12 minutes!

Day #5

Tuesday 5th May
Epic run this evening - needed to fit it in before afloat lifeboat training later.
For the first time I felt I covered more distance running than walking. Crucially my legs aren't hurting as much afterwards so that's a sure sign of progress!

Actually looking forward to tomorrows effort!

Keep up the support! I need and appreciate it!

Mayday Mile day #4

Tuesday 5th May
Mixed session of Gym activity and a football pitch runaround with my son. Limbs starting to tolerate this all a bit more. Great support from all so far!

Day #3

Sunday 3rd May
My body hinted that I've been over doing it - sore knees and ankles today so I took a different approach and headed to the gym instead with my son, we had a nice hours work out - I covered a mile on the treadmill and then mixed time between rowing, ski machine and some weights. I was determined to run the mile every day but I have to be realistic with myself and manage what my body needs most. I'm grateful this challenge is helping me learn about myself, long overdue!

Day #2

Sunday 3rd May
Day 2 was quite tough on the knees, I was aching before too long and this was reflected in the pace - bit I got through it. I caught my mindset getting negative and did a better job than usual of snapping out of it though, determination improving!

Thanks for continued support!

Day #1

Saturday 2nd May
Decided to start the challenge with a morning mile attempt - again making the most of the Holyhead Breakwater. I walked out a bit then started the run. It felt ok, I was quite focused and used visual markers rather than just running until it hurt. Strava kindly acknowledged some PBs at the end and I'm straying to feel like I'll make progress with this.

One more breakwater run tomorrow before heading home where there are only hills and no doubt suffering!

As a stark reminder of why I'm doing Ng this challenge I've had 2 calls outs during my time covering at Holyhead and as a result a total of 4 people were rescued! I'm grateful to be able to give back in this small way! And thanks all for donating. Please keep up the support and sharey efforts if you are willing and able to - it all helps so much!

Baseline.

Wednesday 29th Apr
I managed to get out this evening ahead of Fridays challenge start. My mile pace was 14:06/mile - which I'm certain I can improve on as I progress. I'm approaching this with a marginal gains mindset - so for now the short term goal is to get down to around 12 minutes and then reassess my target.

This is going to be a tough challenge for me - I'm starting this at a weight of around 21 stone which I'm starting to accept is far too much. I'd love to end May within touching distance of 20 stone.

A nice treat tonight was getting out a short way along Holyhead breakwater - I'm here covering the ALB coxswain position so can't range too far from station but by leaving the van handy I can get atleast 3/4 mile along without being out of range should a call come in.

I'll repeat this run tomorrow and Friday night - with a follow up post here to blog that first May mile!

Wish me luck, give if you can and please know I appreciate all support in all forms ❤️

Starting over.

Sunday 26th Apr
I've let my personal fitness slip.

The Mayday Mile was a great challenge for me a few years ago and gave me real structure and drive so I'm going to give this my all.

I'm aiming to hit a target of jogging/running a mile each day in May. I'll do a treadmill run to get a baseline pace and then see how much that Improves by the end of the month. A mile won't seem like much to some but it really is the moon to me now. I'll be ecstatic if by the end of the month I'm able to run a mile non stop!

I'll update here with atleast weekly check-ins and info on how the challenge is going.

Your support matters so much to me and your donations go towards the RNLIs lifesaving goals so please give financially if you can or reach out with support and encouragement - it all helps!
