How your support helped the RNLI in 2024

437 Lives saved

25,327 People aided by lifeboat crews and lifeguards

9,141 Lifeboat launches

I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

2026 Mayday Mile day 4

Monday 4th May
A walk to and from the lifeboat station, to take photos for one of the crew passing out as a coxswain. All done, I headed home to do some work. I went out in the evening once I was free, and enjoyed a walk around town, then along the beach as the sun was setting.

2026 Mayday Mile day 3

Sunday 3rd May
Today I decided I would push things a bit and walk five miles, which I did in two walks. Some of it was walking to and from work, the rest was a walk along the beach collecting seaweed for my garden (nine bags of, so transported home by car) and a stroll around the town to make up the rest of the miles.

2026 Mayday 150th celebrations Lifeboat Pull

Sunday 3rd May
Eyemouth RNLI lifeboat station was established in 1876 after a couple of years of bad winter storms endangered the fishing fleet.
The town came together and applied for a lifeboat to be brought in.
To celebrate 150 years of the lifeboat in Eyemouth, we followed the same route as the 'James and Rachel Grindlay' took as she was brought into the town, after her journey from the London shipyard to Burnmouth by train.
No horse power this time, our crew pulled our inshore lifeboat 'Sheila' the three miles into Eyemouth and around the town centre. Cheered on by the piping of Sandy Mutch, and the waiting crowds giving encouragement,we arrived at the historic coble house where the volunteers launched 'Sheila' and gave a display of her capabilities.

Mayday Mile jaunts

Sunday 3rd May
It is Mayday time again, an opportunity to raise some funds for the RNLI as well as get a bit fitter after the dark Winter months.

It is one mile from my house to the lifeboat station and back, which is handy as I go there a couple of times most weeks, although some days I enjoy a stroll around the harbour just to be nosey, or do some photography..
I also enjoy a walk around the town, ' dark and cunning of aspect, full of curious alleys, blind and otherwise, and having no single house of any standing but what could unfold its tale of wonder.'

For my first Mayday Miles, two years ago I had an idea to travel my mile(s) in weird and wonderful ways. Maybe hop, or go on a small child's cycle. I soon gave up on that and walked, cycled or occasionally ran.

This year I aim to do at least 2-3 miles each day, and keep wearing my 'Mayday' t-shirt for some public awareness.
