Taking on the Reindeer Run challenge for RNLI lifesavers

RNLI supporters around the country will be donning their antlers and strapping up their hooves to run 24 miles – all to help keep RNLI volunteers safe this winter.

Freezing seas, numbing winds and sub-zero temperatures – would you fancy launching into that aboard a lifeboat? RNLI crews will be doing just that, battling the elements this winter to continue their mission to save every one.

Reindeer Runners will be raising money so they have everything they need to answer the call for help. Because no matter how harsh the winter weather might be, lifeboat crews will always launch to the rescue. I’d be so grateful if you could sponsor me.

My Updates

Me, and my shadow

Wednesday 31st Dec
And so, the final run and blog post of the challenge.

Today I was joined by Ems on my run.she asked to stop for a rest before I did- result!

It was very slow as we jogged to the park and so there was a halfway pause as Emmy insisted on a go on the swings.

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me, wished me luck or who has read my ramblings on here.

Wishing you all the 2026 of your dreams

Target completed!

Monday 29th Dec
So today I did my final Couch to 5k run and got to my 24 mile target. I actually ran 4k, not 5k, so that's the next challenge.

There will be a Special Guest joining me on my final run on New Year's Eve... She's very excited!

Merry Christmas to all!

Thursday 25th Dec

I've found the running deck, which means I nearly got blown away but avoided the dreaded treadmill.

A wise woman I once worked with used to say, usually when things were particularly difficult or bonkers (both of which occur frequently in my chosen line of work), ‘Life is about choices’. And the life choices I've made have led me to be running around a boat on Christmas morning as opposed to safely tucked up in Hereford Cathedral listening to THAT chord being belted on the organ.

But, here I am. Lucky enough that my choices and the situation I've been given allows me the freedom and opportunity to visit beautiful places, run freely, drink Pina Coladas until past midnight and live my life according to my own choices. The only choice I'd currently question is spending Christmas in Zebrugge as it's one of the ugliest places I've ever been 😂

Merry Christmas, one and all. I'll raise a Pina Colada to you all later 🍹

Running on water...

Tuesday 23rd Dec
Hoi vanuit Rotterdam! So. This morning the thought of running for 30 minutes was just unpalatable, so I dialled back to week six of Couch to 5k and did some interval runs instead. Actually, covered nearly the same distance so not so bad all in all. Two more runs and I've hit my total, but I'll just keep logging what I do and see if we can make it to 30 miles in total. Right, off to sample the delights of breakfast buffet!...

You'll have to trust me on this one...

Saturday 20th Dec
So, I've come away for Christmas and actually packed my trainers and went for a run.
Unfortunately it was on a treadmill in the HOTTEST gym in the world which then stopped half way through so I have no evidence of distance. But I've reached week 9 of couch to 5k in which you run for thirty minutes. Reader, I did not run for thirty minutes which seems a brief moment when sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea and a good book, but seems oddly longer when overheating whilst plodding on the spot... But I moved for thirty minutes (plus warm up and cool down as Jo Whiley tells me this is very important) so that's something.

Yesterday, it was 44 years since the Penlee life boat disaster off the coast of Mousehole. I find it incredible that the volunteers of the RNLI risk their lives like this. Makes a bit of a jog seem quite doable...

Whoa, I'm half way there...

Tuesday 16th Dec
So got to the twelve mile mark today (cumulatively, obviously. 12 miles in one go would be madness!).

I didn't manage to run the whole 28 minutes couch to five k told me I should be running as I finished week eight. It's so odd- sometimes it all feels fairly easy and other times it's a slog. Today my brain and my legs felt out of synch. My legs sort of wanted to keep going but my head was wanting a little walk instead. Ah well, I'll get there.

Next run on Thursday. I'm really hoping it's not as wet as it's predicted to be! Not sure how you run with an umbrella. Or maybe I'll just wear goggles? 🤣 Anyway, I'll keep you updated...

Back in the Shire

Thursday 11th Dec
Back home, and running round the park once more. I've been exploring the local area too- turns out there's a whole estate of houses round the corner from me which I knew nothing about.

Other than one very muddy hill, I ran for 28 minutes which I'm really pleased about. It's still very slow (I think a snail overtook me at one point), but it's happening.

Thanks for all the sponsorship so far. I'd certainly rather be huffing round a park than hearing out on a lifeboat so this seems a more achievable way to support the RNLI. Also, mahes more geographical sense...

Norfolk. Less flat than they'd have you believe.

Saturday 6th Dec
So, set out from Mum and Dad's this morning and was confident I'd planned a good route. Sadly, it involved far more inclines than I'd thought. And it rained. A lot. So I had a bit of a walk in the middle of my plod, and then ran again when I found some downhill!

Headphones behaved today so I was accompanied by West Side Story. With my hair scraped back, rain dripping down my neck and a very stylish grey fleece, 'I feel pretty' was not my inner vibe. But hopefully later in the day I'll radiate beauty and strength from within having persevered with trudging along.

Thanks again to everyone who has sponsored me. I'm getting dangerously close to hitting double my fundraising target. Which means I might need to up my milage target...

Trudge, trudge, trudge...

Thursday 4th Dec
I knew yesterday that I was not going to want to get up in the dark and go for a run this morning. I was right. But I did it anyway.

My headphones were not playing ball so I had to do the run with no music. it actually turned out to be a really positive thing as I could hear what was going on around me more- I met a scampering squirrel; Pudding, the extremely friendly puppy; heard various bursts of birdsong- all of which I'd have missed if I'd have had Rachmaninov in my ear instead. I find Rachmaninov Piano Concertos are great to run to as they sort of agitate me, so it puts me in a slightly heightened state- a bit like my dad and his reaction to the 'Three Tenors'. Maybe I'll try listening to them if I can sort my headphones out for next time.

The RNLI will only let you round your distance up or down to the nearest mile so my 2.67 miles has rounded up to 3. I need to make sure I'm doing at least 2.5 each run to cheat the system successfully ;-)

Next run will be in Wymondham on Saturday before we tootle off to see Father Christmas.

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far. I can't believe the total already. Bonkers!

On your marks...

Tuesday 2nd Dec
So, first run done!

The boy is off to sing in London today so I've got the day off to go and see him which meant I was able to get a run in after the school drop off. It is so much nicer being out in daylight, and also meant I could trog round the park rather than pounding the pavements.

So the way couch to 5k works is that it starts really gently 'run for a minute, walk for three minutes, then run for another minute'. Then, by the time you hit week 6 they say 'run for 25 minutes' which feels a bit of a leap to be honest. But, I've done it which is the important point.

Like I said, I'm not focusing on speed. So a plod occured and the first two miles (and a bit) are done.

Thanks so much to everyone who has sponsored me so far. Emmy is loving watching the total tot up!

One very important part of running is rest days, so I'll be making sure I rest well tomorrow 🤣

And so it begins...

Monday 1st Dec
So signing up for this in a warm and dry October seemed a great idea to actually get me to finish couch to 5k so I can do a Parkrun with Emmy. On a cold November morning it seemed a daft idea. But, here's hoping for a fairly dry December. I've borrowed a running vest with lights so I can stay safe on the dark nights and mornings.

Speed is not my thing so it'll be more of a poddle than a sprint, but it does mean I'll be giving more time to the challenge than someone who runs at speed. First run is planned for Wednesday morning and I'm hoping to do two miles per run. Let's see how I get on!
