£500 for 500 miles round Kent

By David Hampson-Ghani

I’m fundraising for the RNLI to help power brave lifesavers to the rescue

I volunteer for the RNLI.  I am the Lifeboat Press Officer for Dover RNLI.  My role is to promote and raise awareness of the work of the volunteers at Dover, to cover and issue stories and news releases about their work, the fundraising, the training and of course any rescues.

I'm planning on cycling 500 miles around the lanes and villages of Kent and my target is to raise £500.  I will start my challenge with the Canterbury Bike Ride on Sunday 19 July, and finish with a ride to the Dover RNLI lifeboat station.

Every day, around the coasts of the UK and Ireland, RNLI volunteers are kitting up to answer desperate calls for help. But they can’t launch to the rescue without support. The RNLI relies on donations to fund the kit and training volunteers need to save lives at sea and return safely home.

I’m fundraising to help them stay ready to rescue.

One week to go!

Monday 10th Aug
So I've hit 500 miles an the donations are up to £800.  I wonder if I could hit £1,000?  I must say I've had the perfect cycling weather these last few weeks.  I'm planning to finish at the lifeboat station in Dover on Sunday 16 August around midday, so if you're in the area pop along and say hello.

Two weeks in and already nearly there!

Wednesday 5th Aug
So I'm just over two weeks into the challenge and I've cycled 447 miles and raised over £480, so nearly there on both targets.  The cycling is going well and luckily no mishaps or injuries.  It helps too that we've been blessed with lovely sunny weather here in Kent.  A massive thank you to everyone who has supported my.  Your generous donations are helping t keep lifeboat crtews operational 24/7 to save lives a sea.

First week completed - 235 miles in and £338 raised

Sunday 26th Jul
Wow - so my first week of the challenge and I've almost completed half the mileage, and already over halfway to the target.  After the big 73 mile ride last Sunday 19 July, I went out on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and finished the week with the regular CBC Saturday ride out.  That was 66.8km (41.8 miles) on a beautiful warm sunny day with 6 friends from the bike club.  Unfortunately I got a puncture half way round (the first I've had for over 6 months) but I managed to quickly swap in a new inner tube and get back on the road again.  Here's a snapshot of my progress so far. Thank you everyone who has support the RNLI so far

Start of my challenge!

Monday 20th Jul
On Sunday 19 July I started my challenge by taking part in the Canterbury Bike Ride, covering 118km (73 miles) around Kent on this organised event.  I rode with members of the Canterbury Bicycle Club (CBC).  We started at 7.30am from the Rugby Club and did a circuit that took some of Kent's prettiest villages and countryside passing through Sheldwich, Charing, Westwell, Wye, Stelling Minnis, Elham, Barham, Ash, Preston and Wickhambreux.  Good pace all round and felt good afterwards.  No aches an pains this morning.  Another 427 miles to go!
