Taking on the Reindeer Run challenge for RNLI lifesavers

RNLI supporters around the country will be donning their antlers and strapping up their hooves to run 24 miles – all to help keep RNLI volunteers safe this winter.

Freezing seas, numbing winds and sub-zero temperatures – would you fancy launching into that aboard a lifeboat? RNLI crews will be doing just that, battling the elements this winter to continue their mission to save every one.

Reindeer Runners will be raising money so they have everything they need to answer the call for help. Because no matter how harsh the winter weather might be, lifeboat crews will always launch to the rescue. I’d be so grateful if you could sponsor me.

My Updates

Day 14

Friday 19th Dec
A bittersweet day. I have completed my Reindeer Run challenge today, timed deliberately to honour the brave souls lost on the Solomon Brown 44 years ago today, when the entire crew, all those aboard the Union Star and both ships were lost to appalling weather conditions off the coast of Cornwall. The village of Mousehole, where my daughter in law was born and bred, was devastated by the loss then and continues to mourn and remember to this day. Thank you to all those who have supported me in my fundraising efforts - it means a lot. 🧡💙

Day 13

Thursday 18th Dec
Another damp one but not actually raining. Such easy conditions compared to the conditions the RNLI volunteers have to cope with. Usual run route today but broken the 30 minute barrier at last! Very near my target distance now (waiting for the app to update this page) - will I keep going afterwards 🤔

Day 12

Tuesday 16th Dec
16 December and twelfth day of running. Getting faster each day - by milliseconds admittedly but it all counts, yes?! Well past the 3/4 distance now and just three miles to go! 💙🧡

Day 11

Sunday 14th Dec
No run yesterday as it was Ashbourne Singers’ Christmas concert, so between afternoon practice and evening concert, time was short. Back out today in mild and only slightly damp weather and a new PR set over 2 miles (still not giving Mo Farah sleepless nights though 😆). Can’t thank all my recent sponsors enough for their terrific donations over the weekend - they (and singing Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer on repeat - thank you, AS) got me round my longest distance yet in my best overall time. Thank you 💙🧡

Day 10

Friday 12th Dec
A bit of a poor day today - only 1.5 miles BUT fastest time over … 400m!! 🤣 All I can say is I tried hard but a busy week got the better of me. Thankfully, my wonderful supporters had my back and I am very close to my fourth donation target! So grateful for all the support and can’t thank you enough for powering me forward - only 7 miles left to go 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Day 9

Thursday 11th Dec
Another beautiful day! So much easier to go out when the sun shines! At this time of year, it must be incredibly hard to go out in the pitch dark, torrential rain and howling gales to search for casualties in the middle of the ocean so I’ve really got it very easy! I’ve hit a PR over 2 miles today and I’m more than halfway through the challenge, so all good 🧡💙

Day 8

Wednesday 10th Dec
Walked over 4 miles this morning, so only managed a run of 1.7m this afternoon. Winds were strong today but at least no 40’ waves! Am over half the distance now - yay!!

Day 7

Monday 8th Dec
Phew! It’s sunny and warm today! Longest distance yet (2.23 miles) in 30 mins, including a long uphill warm-up walk. I almost enjoyed it (a natural runner I am not) 🤣 Thanks again for your support and sponsorship xx

Day 6

Saturday 6th Dec
Blimey! Bit soggy out there! HOWEVER, longest run yet at 2 miles. Not fast at 28 minutes but much improved on Day 1.

Day 5

Friday 5th Dec
Back to running - yay! Not fast obviously and several stops for nose-blowing but (according to Strava) my second fastest mile. Very cold today but dry - definitely no 30’ waves or howling gales. When I think I need to stop, thinking of the conditions the RNLI volunteers go out in keeps me pushing on. Thank you to everyone who has donated - it’s a great encouragement ☺️

Day 4

Thursday 4th Dec
Cold is an even better cold today, hence another walk. Weather was drizzly and cold but determined to get out if only for a single mile.

Day 3

Thursday 4th Dec
Had to walk today, courtesy of beastly cold. Makes you realise - again - how tough the volunteers are.

Day 2

Tuesday 2nd Dec
Well, it wasn’t raining! Or blowing a gale! 1.3 miles today, so a bit further than yesterday. Have realised how VERY out of practice I am at this running lark but I’m not out in the middle of the ocean in towering waves and the pitch dark. Such admiration for all the brave RNLI volunteers who go out in all weathers to save lives 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Day 1 - DONE!

Monday 1st Dec
First mile done in between showers and despite headwinds on the uphills! Only 23 to go …
