How your support helped the RNLI in 2024

437 Lives saved

25,327 People aided by lifeboat crews and lifeguards

9,141 Lifeboat launches

I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Walk in the Park

Tuesday 28th Apr
My walk on Monday (28/04) was in Nene Country Park. This was quite an emotional milestone for me. Last year I was in so much pain I could hardly walk from one end of the house to the other. Any trips to a park were done in a wheelchair! Yesterday I walked the 2.6 miles around Nene Valley Country Park, with a couple of stops, with just a walking stick and largely free from pain. It gave me a huge amount of satisfaction and courage that I can go on and complete my MayDayNile Challenge. An additional plus was that we are using our much loved old motorhome once more which we were unable to do last year. It was also a lovely day, and the birdsong along our walk was glorious.

My Cardiac Exercise

Thursday 23rd Apr
Once or twice a week I attend an exercise class for those who have experienced a heart attack or similar. They are encouraged by cardiologists in order to try and prevent further attacks and are taken by specially trained instructors. We start with a warm up, then complete two circuits of exercises designed to increase your heart rate then end with a cool down. During the course of the hour we do quite a lot of steps so I checked how far I was doing on my phone app. It showed I had done just over a mile so today (23/04/26) I have counted it towards my MayDayMile total.

First logged walk

Thursday 16th Apr
Today I completed my first walk of the challenge. We are currently dog sitting for our daughter, and taking the dog for a walk is not easy for me these days as I have to use a stick, and walk very slowly. I thought it would be nice to remember my first day of the challenge in this way, as I shall not have this particular opportunity throughout May.

Some of last year’s knitted ‘creatures’ which helped the Farringdon group raise funds for the Association. With the onset of joint and bone problems in later years I have become a compulsive knitter and was pleased to find an outlet for my ‘creatures’ and do some good for a very worthy cause.
