I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

Between myself and the rest of the crew at Arran RNLI, we will be doing 1 mile every day in May.

We will we running, walking, sailing or even swimming in Lamlash. Join in if you can!

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Day 31. The Final Miles

Saturday 31st May
Well, completed it, mate!

I have actually really enjoyed getting out and about across Lamlash, Seamill, Poole, and Troon.  Been super lucky with the weather in an amazing May in the west of Scotland.

A few miles walk, occasional jog, some sailing and some cycling. Good for the base fitness and headspace!

A MASSIVE thank you to those who have sponsored this.  You really are making a difference to saving lives at sea and our mission "To Save Every One".

Your money will be used in the 'front line' so to speak, in Lifesaving Operations.

We have kicked through my target of £250 and now closing in on £400!!!  That's decent!
To put that in perspective, that's an ILB Crew Lifejacket, or most of a new ILB Crew Drysuit.  Or maybe 10 hours fast running in terms of fuel for the Atlantic 85.

Thank you.

During my 'miles', I have had quite a bit of time to think about why I do this......
I met a lady on the ferry the other day who approach me in my RNLI jacket.  She told me the story of her grandmother (I think) who was lost in a ferry accident in N Ireland 100 odd years ago. And how the brave volunteers of the local lifeboats had battled terrible conditions to go to the aid of people they didn't know, or possibly pull those they did from the sea.

And that is it.

Service. Not Self.

I have lost friends at sea. I have called a lifeboat for real. I have had close calls subsequently.  I have saved lives.

But one thing that is ALWAYS there is the brave volunteers of the RNLI, ready to drop whatever they are doing, and put to sea to save life.

We used to have a sticker on the back of B-876 Rachel Hedderwick that read....

"Lifeboats. Because even firemen need heroes."

Thank you. You are all lifesavers.

Day 20

Tuesday 20th May
20 days in, 44 miles logged and over £200 of donations.  Awesome.  Thank you so much.

Your support of RNLI Lifeboats really does make you a life saver.

In 2006, midway across the Atlantic, Hans Horrevoets was washed overboard, in the dark, in a building breeze, off the Volvo 70 Abn Amro 2.
Through some amazing seamanship, the crew managed to find him and recover him.  An incredible feat in itself  Sadly,  after substantial intervention, the crew were unable to revive him.  I was a part of the team behind the race team, looking after the winch system on the boat and knew, and still know, many of the crew closely.  A very tough time in a challenging race.

That is one of the reasons I do this, why I give back by volunteering to be a lifeboat crew and now SAR Unit Commander as an Atlantic 85 Helm on Arran.

Our mission is "To Save Every One"

Please support your Lifeboats.

Mayday Mile Week 1

Wednesday 7th May
A mix of running (and yes, I'm not really a runner!) in full shore team kit in the warm spring weather, including with a few other crew mates, a lovely evening fast walk with more crew mates and a couple of suitably dressed dogs, and then two 'long miles' on the water.
The sailing miles have been a lot of fun, obviously, and doing this challenge and getting some good training in has been great! Sailing at least 6-10 km, about 90 minutes each time, tacking myself into a frenzy!  For this I have been wearing an RNLI shore team hi-viz vest if you have seen me in Lamlash Bay.

This may evolve to some kind of challenge race between running and sailing soon.....

Watch this space!

Meanwhile, thanks for the toots of the horn and the waves. Appreciated, and keep supporting your local Lifeboat!
You are literally Lifesavers.
