Taking on the Reindeer Run Challenge for RNLI lifesavers

RNLI supporters around the country will be donning their antlers and strapping up their hooves to run 24 miles – all to help keep RNLI volunteers safe this winter.

Freezing seas, numbing winds and sub-zero temperatures – would you fancy launching into that aboard a lifeboat? RNLI crews will be doing just that, battling the elements this winter to continue their mission to save every one.

Reindeer Runners will be raising money so they have everything they need to answer the call for help. Because no matter how harsh the winter weather might be, lifeboat crews will always launch to the rescue. I’d be so grateful if you could sponsor me.

My RNLI story

Monday 18th Nov
Father's Day - June 2021 is a day myself, my husband Kyle and our son Ezra will never forget. Thankfully our youngest son Jude will not remember as he was only 5 months old at the time.
What began as a nice family boat trip ended in disaster and could have cost us our lives.
We had hired a little pleasure boat and headed off across the Fermanagh lakes. My husband Kyle is not an experienced boater but the lake was calm and we were having a great afternoon.
On the way back things changed. The wind had picked up and the water was choppy - much too choppy for the little boat to manage. My husband started to become alarmed as we were being pushed off course and we phoned the company we had hired the boat from to come and assist us.
Unfortunately it took some time for them to find us so my gut instinct told me to phone the RNLI because we were headed for rocks. By the time anyone got to us we had crashed into rocks, unsure where we were and afraid to get off the boat because we had our two young sons with us (then 5 months old and 4 years old). The two young men from the hire company were unable to control their own boat and had to abandon it along with ours and we had no choice but to escape onto the rocks as the boat was beginning to sink.
Taking a 5 month old baby out of a sinking boat was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life but we had to remain calm for our other son.
The RNLI were with us within minutes and knew exactly where we were and that dry land was just behind us. They took control of the situation, reassured us, made us feel safe and wrapped our 5 month old son up in a blanket.
I will be forever grateful for those 2 volunteer RNLI crew (one of which was a woman) who give up their spare time to save lives. Without them our story would most likely not have had a happy ending. Their role in my community is vital because we live in an area surrounded by lakes.
For this reason I would like to put aside some of my spare time to run 24 miles in December- which represents 24 hours a day in which the RNLI volunteers are on call over Christmas.  I hope the little bit that I raise can make a difference.
