I’m taking on the Mayday Mile challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile challenge and support the courageous crews?

My Updates

Birthday walk

Sunday 26th May
It's my birthday and I still walked my mile - IN THE RAIN. I've done 28 miles in the last 26 days. Some days it has been the only thing I've physically managed to do in the day, often split into 2 separate walks.

If that doesn't push you to sponsor me, then do it for my birthday present?

Swimming

Saturday 18th May
At the pool on Thursday I thought it might be a good idea to try swimming the mile. Turns out, it feels a LOT longer to swim a mile than walk, even with my disability!

I am now considering building up to swimming a mile, but that can be another months challenge 😅

Some days it's really tricky to get that walk in, and I'll admit that there have been 11pm meanderings around the village just to clock the mile, but I'm doing it.

A wet walk

Sunday 12th May
I've been keeping my walks until the end of the day recently - the quiet is rather calming. After a busy and troubling couple of days, starting with a hospital trip on Friday for a toe injury (that didn't stop me!) and various other busy days, I decided to take a stroll up the Gorge with a couple of friends for a cake and coffee - and annoy 2 of my children at work.

It was a beautiful walk up. Lovely snack and drinks with the children. Beautiful walk down for a few minutes until that first hot, fat droplet of rain hit my arm. Suddenly the heavens opened and we were drenched. We decided to just carry on walking and maybe get ourselves a badge for singing in the rain and by the time we were home, we were drenched and the rain had stopped 🥴🤣

Maybe nighttime walks again?! You'd think they'd have been worth it if I'd seen the Northern lights during them!

Needing a good way to track this!

Tuesday 7th May
I failed two things today - posting parcels, and tracking my walk. The parcels was an anxiety issue, the tracking a phone battery one. It should be resolved now though as I've borrowed a fitness watch! Let's hope we can link technology once it's charged!

So, an untracked mile. Will you allow it?!

First mile done!

Wednesday 1st May
I knew this would be a challenge and I certainly hope it gets easier.

I broke today into two parts, parking half a mile from where I was having a meeting. My back clicked and I was limping before the 1/4 marker. I was surprised at how long it took (and felt) too. An eye opener to how quickly your life changes with disability.

I will continue - even if I have to do it another way. There are options to swim the mile, so that may be where this goes. Either way, I'll do it 💪

Motivations

Friday 5th Apr
So most people that know me know that just over a year ago, I had two major emergency surgeries - one to save the life of my unborn baby, the other to potentially save my ability to walk.
I had a car crash 8 years ago that caused more damage than anyone realised. This led to cauda equina and the hardened leaked spinal disc fluid to shatter and interfere with my nerves, paralysing me and causing horrific pain. My surgery went well and I can walk again. I have been left with difficulties, constant pain and other issues but having lost the ability to walk, I am grateful I still can. This is why I want to do this challenge. I want to push myself, and increase my fitness.
I will be using the pushchair - jokingly named the disguised Zimmer frame - and bringing along aforementioned baby, plus sometimes my 4 year old. I struggle to go far without something to lean on but luckily I have a few more years before I have to worry about that!

Anyway, please sponsor me!

Thank you to my Sponsors
