I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

This May, I’m completing a mile-a-day challenge to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

During summertime, more people flock to beaches and coastal towns to make the most of everything they have to offer – from glorious sunshine to adventurous watersports. And as temperatures rise, so do calls from people in trouble in the water.

By answering this Mayday call and giving a gift today, you can make a real, lifesaving difference. Your kindness will help give volunteers everything they need to launch to the rescue, and make sure they’re ready to face their busiest season.

Will you sponsor my RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews?

Why I became a Launch Authority for the RNLI

Thursday 10th Apr

When people think of the RNLI, they often picture the lifeboat crews — brave volunteers battling rough seas to rescue those in trouble. And they should. These individuals are heroes. But behind every launch, there’s someone on shore making it all happen. That’s where I come in — as a Launch Authority, I’m the person who gives the green light for the lifeboat to launch.

So, why did I take on this role?

For me, it’s about purpose and community. I’ve always had huge respect for the RNLI — a charity made up almost entirely of volunteers, dedicated to saving lives at sea. I wanted to do something meaningful, and I found that I could play a critical part even without setting foot on the boat.

Being a Launch Authority means being available at all hours, making quick decisions under pressure, and being responsible for the safety of our crew. It’s not a role I take lightly. Every time the pager goes off, there’s a sense of urgency — but also calm determination. I know the training, the people, and the stakes.

What inspires me most is the teamwork. Everyone, from the shore crew to the lifeboat crew, is focused on one goal: bringing people home safe. Knowing that I help make that happen — that I’m part of something bigger than myself — is incredibly fulfilling.

Volunteering for the RNLI isn’t just about helping others — it’s changed me, too. It’s given me confidence, resilience, and a strong connection to my local community.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, supporting, or even just learning more about the RNLI, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you’re out on the water or supporting from land, every role saves lives.
