I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers

Why am I doing it? Firstly, I like a challenge!

Most importantly, my family and close friends have a history of volunteering with the RNLI. My Dad has been part of St Bees Lifeboat for 43 years, along with my Granda, who retired his iconic yellow boots in 2017.

I grew up with the sound of my Dad's pager going off (if you know the sound, you'll know it stays with you for life), followed by a shout of "Callout! See you later!", or sometimes just the sound of the back gate slamming behind him as he ran down to the station - regardless of the weather. I've heard a lot of the stories and witnessed some of them myself, both the good and the bad.

🚤 In 2024, the RNLI turned 200 years old, having saved 146,277 lives in that time. On average, it costs £1,450 to train a crew member and to stay afloat (pun intended) it costs roughly £191million a year.

So, I'm doing my bit with the Mayday Mile! I'll be covering at least a mile a day (whatever the weather) for the whole of May to raise money 🏃‍♀️👟

My Updates

31 miles complete

Tuesday 13th May
I've passed the target 31 miles in the RNLI Mayday Mile challenge 👟 But that doesn't mean I'm stopping!

So far, I've run 20 miles and walked 12 miles, including my first 10k 🏃‍♀️

Massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored so far and supported the RNLI (I'm over halfway to my target), it is really appreciated! ⚓️

VE Day

Thursday 8th May
Today is day 8 of the Mayday Mile challenge. It is also VE day, marking 80 years since the end of World War II.

Did you know?
During World War II, the RNLI launched lifeboats 3,760 times to support those in need from planes and ships, saving 6,376 lives.

In 1940, 19 RNLI lifeboats also took part in the "Little Ships" effort of Operation Dynamo to evacuate soldiers from the shores of Dunkirk.
