I’m taking on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers
Why am I doing it? Firstly, I like a challenge!
Most importantly, my family and close friends have a history of volunteering with the RNLI. My Dad has been part of St Bees Lifeboat for 43 years, along with my Granda, who retired his iconic yellow boots in 2017.
I grew up with the sound of my Dad's pager going off (if you know the sound, you'll know it stays with you for life), followed by a shout of "Callout! See you later!", or sometimes just the sound of the back gate slamming behind him as he ran down to the station - regardless of the weather. I've heard a lot of the stories and witnessed some of them myself, both the good and the bad.
🚤 In 2024, the RNLI turned 200 years old, having saved 146,277 lives in that time. On average, it costs £1,450 to train a crew member and to stay afloat (pun intended) it costs roughly £191million a year.
So, I'm doing my bit with the Mayday Mile! I'll be covering at least a mile a day (whatever the weather) for the whole of May to raise money 🏃♀️👟
